it appears as though my 3 weeks old DS has thrush in his mouth.
he has had trouble feeding since his first week and i put him on formula and noticed he couldn't get his tongue around teat very well and wondered what was wrong.
could it be that he's had it for that long?the CHN and i both thought last week the white spots on his tongue were from milk.

anyone else experienced thrush?

Yep. we got some drops for it, but not sure if it's still available. Our girl was in ICU and then got golden staph, so goodness knows what drugs they put in her system for that. Then she was at a babies home and I hate to think what happened to her when I wasn't looking. It cleared with the drops though.

Hi, a friend of mine had thrush vaginally when she gave birth but didnt know it, so her baby ended up with it orally, then transferred it to her nipples when breastfeeding. She had to treat herself, plus the baby. Its possible your baby has had it since birth  im not sure what is safe to treat a baby with so maybe see your GP? It might be a good idea to treat yourself(nipples and vaginally) if you have symptoms or plan to breastfeed again, as well as doing an antibacterial treatment on his bottles, dummies etc(the chemist should be able to advise you on what to use)

makes one wonder doesn't it as i had thrush vaginally during my pregnancy due to anti biotics and what if it didn't clear? i will double sterilise everything now

yeah I had it really bad too, but I got swabbed just before labour and got the all clear so maybe yours came back without noticing? Im not sure just sterilising is enough to kill the bacteria:confused: you may need to use something like milton? if you dont already.

would it explain why he had trouble sucking? does it hurt?

hmm Im not sure, it may? I know it itches like crazy down there for us girls so its possible its uncomfortable at least for him. does he have any other signs of things that would cause feeding problems like tongue tie?

oh dont feel that way:hugs: it happens more than you know, lots of times you can have thrush and not even know you have it! Plus I wouldnt know what it looks like in a babies mouth at all:no: My friend had no idea that she needed to treat her nipples so she gave it back to her son 4 times before she treated herself! dont feel bad. If you can see your GP they should tell you what it is for sure & advise the best treatment.

When my DD was a few weeks old, she got oral thrush, and i had a bit of nipple thrush. hurt like hell for me at least. for some reason, it didnt really seem to bother dd.

My CHN actually suggested using the Daktarin oral gel for us both. She told me to spread some on my nipple as it would help mine, and in addition to that, put a little on my finger and spread it around in DD's mouth. So, she would be protected from my nipple thrush at the same time as treating her own.... DD cleared up in no time at all!

The roof of my sons mouth is whiteish, but the gums along the rear top of his mouth, and the roof just near the gum are really white, but he doesn't have a white tongue.

Could this still be oral thrush?

And how long does it take the Daktarin to work?
