View Full Version : jolly jumpers
Hi, I was wondering if anyone has used a jolly jumper???
Are they good and how long did you use them for?
I am thinking of getting one for Charlie but he is almost 6 months, and I don't know how long I would be able to use it for
Hi there
Yeh Jolly Jumpers are excellent. You can use them as long as baby has strong neck and is holding it up themselves (usually 5-6mths old) and they obsolutely love it... My son is a bit small at the moment (11 weeks) but I have one ready and waiting. My little newphew loved his and it made him giggle and laugh heaps...

jolly jumpers are a pet hate of mine...my chiro told me to steer clear because they can alter the development of the feet, and cause problems with walking.
Every child is different, if you think he will like it Kara, give it a go :)
Hi Kara, I agree with Georgia, because he is 6mths you should hire one from the toy library if they have one or borrow one to see what they are like and wether bubs likes it or not, I personally think they are unsafe unless they are used on a stand, i've seen a few babies fall in them, I never used one, instead I brought a exercaucer, was the best perchase that i made, bubs can still jump in it and turn around and there are toys attached, better still you can use them up till a year old depending on how mobile they are at that age.
oh and Jackson84 they only cause problems with feet when babies are put in them for a long period of time, same goes for walkers and exersaucers
Cool, thanks for that. Georgia I would really appreciate to borrow yours, thank you so much for offering. I have no idea if Charlie will like it or not.
PJ loved his, though he didn't use it a lot, he was a very spewy baby so there was a very limited amount of time we could have him in it before he :barf: all over the floor:eek: ... nice
We have one waiting for bubby and will put him in it when he is around 4 months old.
We have the door lined up and everything and I can't wait to see him in it. Every time I have seen a baby in one they are fair cracking up and having a whale of a time.
We are planning for jumpy time to be when we are eating our dinner at night, so he would be in it for about ten minutes a day if he's happy.
Hopefully he will go along with our plans, but you never know. He might hate it.
Hi
I highly reccomend them!
Ashlee loved jumping up and down in hers!:smiliedance:
So many reasons why they are good, but i found it Kept her occupied and in one spot while i did other things, she would jump for nearly an hour sometimes and her legs became stronger too.
If you get the "Jolly Jumper" brand, the information on the box tells you that it is suitable for babies 3 months and up and it is made so there is no strain on babies necks and backs and lists all the benefits.
Ash stopped using hers once she began sitting up and crawling (about 5 or 6 months), i think once she became mobile she hated being confined to one spot.
So if Charlie is 6 months now it is probably best to hire one!
I'm with jackson84..... I think they are very dangerous. They place unneccesary strain on their little backs and muscles.
SOME parents tend to use them as baby sitters leaving their babies in their far too long. If people ARE going to use them they should only put their baby in there for no longer than 5 minutes at a time and stay with them at all times.
Em's physio, and others that I know of too, absolutley hate them for more reasons than I have mentioned. They also hate walkers, as it places the same amount of strain on them and parents tend to start using them when their baby is far too young and as baby sitters.

Everyone has their own opinions :) :) :)
As you probably haven't used a Jolly Jumper for the reasons you stated above,
Heres what the box says:
*Provides essential aerobic exercise * Improves abdominal and limb muscle tone
*Developes basic motor skills * Improves co-ordination and rhythm
*Encourages self esteem
In the jolly jumper, the baby stands in the saddle, weight forward on the tummy. This is similar to the position andsupport you would give a baby held against your shoulder, with none of the baby's weight on his spine.
The Jolly jumper fits like a second skin and allows complete freedom of the arms, legs, head and shoulders for easy natural movement and breathing.
The jolly jumper is one of the few exerciser products suitable for babies who are old enough to hold their head up, but not yet able to walk. This is usually about 3 months old.
This is only possible because the unique Jolly Jumper saddle supports the baby's undeveloped spine.
Jolly Jumper is the original baby exerciser. It has been used in homes and hospitals around the world since it was first developed in 1958 and continues to be recommended by doctors, paediatricians, fitness experts and parents alike.
Confinement in a crib or playpen seldom satisfies an action seeking pre toddler for long. The first choice of every baby is mothers attention or Dads bouncy knee! After that theres the floor but that doesn't respond very well. Your growing baby needs to develope strong muscles, balance, co-ordination, courage and self confidence.
You can be confident your baby is safe, happy and active while you enjoy a play session or quiet break with each other.
I had Ash in it from 3 months, she was crawling at 5.5 months and is now taking her first steps at 9 months, so i would say she is developing fine!
QUOTE: "parents tend to start using them when their baby is far too young and as baby sitters."
To start off Ashlee was only in the Jumper for 5 - 10 mins at a time but then by about 6 months she would stay in it longer because she enjoyed it. When i said "while i did other things" i was always in the room and interacting with her!
So there you go ladies, all the information you need when deciding to use a jolly jumper. :smiliedance:
Thanks again for all the input, it is good to know the good and bad about a product. I am going to take some of your advice and borrow one for a while to see how Charlie likes it.
Hey Karalee,
I just wanted to let you know there is nothing dangerous about them (if used properly of course). So if your lil man likes it then, go for it! - You and Charlie will have hours of boing boing fun! :smiliedance:

Hi there, just my input. I didn't ever really like them and then we had an occupational therapist come talk to us at out mothers parenting classes and she highly discouraged them. She said that they discouraged children from walking on their feet properly, like walkers, because they never have their feet flat on the surface. She said that many children who are put in JJ's a lot can have problems with the development of their calves and tendons around their ankles, sometimes requiring surgery to 'loosen' the tendon. She said that they also can cause pigeon toe in children, and it could be coincidental but my nephew used a JJ when he was a baby and he is terribly pigeon toed and now has to do daily exercies and wear orthotics.
In my trusty 'bible' - Baby Love by Robin Barker, they are highly discouraged and she writes that the majority of admissions to hospital for infants are injuries resulting from Jolly Jumpers and walkers....
Don't shoot the messenger, that's just the info I have and that helped me make a pretty quick decision.
I don't care what the box says I have heard it direct from professionals that they are VERY BAD!! Some mothers I have spoken to who have used them even repoted their child walking late and not wanting to crawl as they wanted to be boincing. Some babies wouldn't stand properly as they were so used to boincing the would just want to be held there so they could bounce.
Just what I know. And I do know that manufacturers will put anything on a box to help it sell.
I fyou are going to use it please only put your baby in there for brief periods and DON"T use it as a baby sitter, please stay close by. This is how injury occurs.
I hate walkers for the same reasons. They don't encourage baby to do anything. They will walk when they are ready, these 'death traps' don't help them to develop these skills faster in my opinion and professionals opinion too they only hold a child back.
WOW!!!! Seems this is a touchy subject for some.
This forum is for people to express their own opinions.
This particular thread was asking for others opinions and experiences with Jolly Jumpers.
My posts are for karalee's benefit so she can see that i, myself, have had no trouble in my experiences with Jolly Jumpers, and i posted the info on the box so she could decide for herself whether or not to use one.
I find the attitude of your posts quite angry and they seem to be aimed towards me!?
There is no need to be angry and confronting,we are all different people, from all different walks of life and have all had different experiences. That is what this forum is for, so we can learn and tell others our experiences and what works for us - in a friendly, helpful manner.
I hope we can agree to disagree and move on from here:)
Was just expressing my opinion the same as you. I was not angry at you or any one else for that matter. Just stating what I know and how I feel about jolly jumpers. I know that you have had a good experience with them and good for you, really. She did ask for advice, true, I was simply giving some.
~agreeing to disagree~
Great :) :)
I feel better now, hope you do too:thumbsup:

Will try a bit latter on. Thought I knew how to put it it but not to sure anyone can you help explain how they go up. If not I'll get Kel to explain.
Diana
ok, so I got one and put charlie in it. And I have never seen him laugh and smile so much. 5 minutes was enough for him, he wore himself out.
What a fantastic invention, but i do agree with the short time frames only!!
Thanks again everyone, i will close this thread now;)
