View Full Version : Who will be looking after your firstborn during the birth?

It will only be DH and I in Australia, so that's one reason why I'd really like a homebirth...he'll have to go back to work once the baby is born too.

Who will be looking after your baby/s while you're giving birth and in hospital?

I'm so sorry but I have to poke my nose in because of the title of the thread.

A few months back we were "on call" for some friends of ours when she went into labour. It was such an honour to have the job! I got regular updates on the progress of the birth and when the little one arrived, I really felt like I had such a connection to her! Even four months after the fact, she is very, very special to me!

(PS the older one is very special too - my girlfriend and I work together, live near each other and our two babies were born on the same day in the same hospital three hours apart!)

Oh, and to answer your question Mama - haven't really decided yet (we have a bit of a choice!) - the IL's, my sister or neighbours (depending on the timing of things I guess!)

I asked a friend...

but she wouldn't have got here in time, and luckily my neighbour heard me yelling that my waters had broken and to call said friend NOW.... and she came over and took the boys back to her place.

This time my midwife has said that if it's all progressing as quickly, she can meet me at my place if no ones there to watch the boys, or if we can get in in time, just to bring them along.

All my family are in New Zealand. I'm pretty sure both my parents & my inlaws will be coming over for christmas, Wee Man's birthday & the birth of this bub. Because it's an elective, I'll have a definite arrival date. I'm hoping they will be able to look after Wee Man for me...not sure whether my daughter will be staying home or coming to hospital with me - we'll see closer to the time.

This is something I am a little worried about.

I am moving in two weeks to a new area and do not know anyone. My DH works 40 mins away and any of my family live around 1 hr away. I am nervous as last labour was only around 3 hours......

Oh well - have time on my side to work out a plan!

It's way too early to be thinking about this for us, we will work it out closer to the time. More importantly, we have to figure out where and how I can give birth.

It will most likely be family for us. I'm also having a CS and I'm not sure if we will have DS at the hospital with us and have someone watching him in the waiting room. We will go to an open day at the hospital beforehand and see what they suggest.

I'm not sure either. All our family is in the UK. The friend I would have asked is going away for the summer hols so won't be around. I have another couple of good friends I could ask and I know DS#1 likes their children. However, one of them is overseas until Aug and they hope to live in my area on their return.

I guess if the worst comes to the worst he'll have to come to the hopsital until we can sort something out.

Incy Wincy that was something on my mind too...I would have to go home once the baby is born if we did that anyway.

Argh!! So confusing!!!

Mummy to Mason
26-05-2008, 06:51 PM
Either my sister or my Mum. Last time my mum was there in the room when Mason was born but since I am having a c/s this time I'm not sure if she would be allowed to. Either way, I'd like whoever is looking after Mason to be nearby because I want him to be the first person to meet and bond with his baby brother or sister :bee:

For us it will probably be dh's mum. I will be having an elective c-section though so this makes it easier to book someone in!!!! :)

Last time I asked to be induced the wedensday after my due date as DS#1 went to daycare that day. But he no longer goes so I am not sure what we will do. Thankfully both of my labours have been really short and in the day time so I am sure one of my friends will have the boys. Will have to wait and see as the time draws closer.

I have no idea yet because everyone who could look after DS works so they may need to take time off.
