View Full Version : Help, bub has been refusing bottles
most of the day today DD has been refusing her bottles, she had a bottle 1am yesterday morning, but only took 100mls, then she didn't wake till 9am and had 170mls, then didn't have another bottle till 3pm, took 200mls, then tried to give her a bottle at 7pm, refused, tried again a hour later, refused, tried againg at 10pm, refused, she's been asleep since 10.45, i'm worried about her not having any fluids for so long, she won't drink water either, getting anything past thoes lips or tongue is a mission
anyone have any suggestions on what I can do, she seams happy enough, apart from when she's tired, she gets cranky then,
i'm hoping she wakes up soon for a bottle, I don't want her to get dehydrated
she's 8mths old, just about 7mths corrected if thats any help

:( Sorry to hear this gizzy :hugs:
Maybe you could change teats,?
Sorry I am as clue less as you are right now.
thanks Neo for the hugs
I might try the really fat tommee tippee bottles again tomorrow, but she has been absolutly fine with these bottles for the rest of the time, I just don't get it:banghead:
I want the head banging smilie to come back, cause thats what I feel like doing :(
hi
i co-bottle feed my ds from 3 months until he was 6 months.
i have a couple of suggestions
try a different formula, they actually taste different
my son went of his tucker when he was teething
and also when he was feeling unwell, eg about to get a cold, had a cold, etc
has it been a struggle to wean to a bottle? maybe try different teats? or a different size, the child may be getting frustrated at not getting enough
also my ds appetite went up and down, i would make smaller bottles and offer them more regually just to make sure the child is getting enough fluids
if you dont get any success talk to you child health nurse
she should also be on the next formula if i remember correctly, there is one for 6 months +, it contains more iron and the appropriate dietry intakes for them
good luck

Is she taking more solids of late ?
If so she could be cutting out the nite feed or at least cutting her bottles down.
By this age they tend to be down to 4 or so bottles depending on solid intake.
To watch for dehydration keep an eye on her tongue as that tends to be the first sign which is when it becomes really dry & rough. Otherwise pinching a little bit of skin & seeing whether it 'tents' is another way but tends to be something that comes later.
If she is sleepier than normal she may just have a bug or may be having a growth spurt that requires some extra sleep. So watch out in coming days as you wont be able to get enough into her !
But if it does keep up then definitely get her to the doctor !
Good luck i know how hard it can be to struggle to get anything into them & how stressful it can be :hugs:
nah I can barely get any solids into her, and normally she would only have 4 bottles a day, she's never really been much of a good feeder,
it just seams to be getting worse and worse, just when I think she's starting to do well, she goes backwards
if there isn't any improvement by mid morning tomorrow i'll be ringing health line,
thanks for the advice everyone

First time mine refused feeds it turns out she had a really sore and infect throat, but no other symptoms, she was about 6 or 9 months I think, it obviously hurt to swallow.
How did you go last night Gizzy?
It's funny how she is changing her bottle feeding habits instantly! She gobbled the bottle down when she was here on Friday, yet now she's changed the rules on your again. How frustrating for you :(
Could it be she is smelling your breast milk still? I have no idea how long it takes for your breastmilk to leave your system sorry!
Wyatt went off his bottles at around 8 months, but then again he was cutting a tooth, but like J, he gobbled solids and water down.
well i've only managed to get 100mls into her since 3pm yesterday, its not like her to refuse all bottles, just the occasional one, so i'm a bit worried
i've got medcall comming out soon to check her over, i've checked her temp and she seams fine, but just want to make sure she doesn't have a throat infection or something, better to get it checked out than not ay
Definately  As you said, you dont want to risk her getting dehydrated.
Hopefully she is just being a stubborn monkey and it's nothing serious and that she checks out OK this morning. We've had Medcall come to the house and Ive had nothing but great Dr's come to the Dr and check us out.
Will send you a text later to see how she is. Sending her hungry hippo vibes in the meantime.
thanks for the hungry hippo vibes lol
i'm hopeing (i know that sounds bad) that she has a infection, at least there will be a reason for her not feeding if there is
At least you will have an answer if she does. The guessing games are frustrating!
You wouldn't believe it, Im singing Hungry Hungry Hippo's now
If all else fails, shoot her over here, we'll have a talk with her

I dont really have any advice. I just wanted to say tyler when of bottle just before 10 months. She never really liked her bottle's and she just stopped having them.
well the doc has just been, she doesn't have a infection, looks perfectly fine to the doc, i'm too give her some pamol and some coloxl drops, and to srynge feed every couple of hours (we'll see if I can get the srynge past thoes stuborn lips) if there is no improvement by later this arvo, i'm to take her to the hosp,
so there goes my day of plans
Bugger... at least if there was an infection you could get answers.
Do you happen to have another brand of formula with you hun? I was maybe thinking she doesn't like the Heinz stuff that much? I noticed that formulas have different smells.
Has Carl tried to give her the bottle instead of you?

I did find this, a few of the tips might help you. Hopefully!
thanks hun, but its nothing to do with me, trust me i've had DH try and feed her, MIL try to feed her, everything, the thing is she was fine with me feeding her a bottle for weeks, so it can't be that, anyways I tried to breast feed her a week or so ago and she refused me :crying:
she has been fine with that formula for the past 2wks, surely she can't just one day decide that she doesn't like it anymore can she?
Wy did, he was on Karicare HA/AR and then one week started refusing them. We changed to the Heinz stuff that A is on and never looked back. We think his tastes changed at that time. Who knows? It's a huge guessing game.
Have you tried a different size bottle and teat? It's just stumped me as she gobbled the bottle down on Friday when she was here (bar the dregs in the bottom)
What was she like on the S26?
S26 made her constipated
that bottle that she took at your place, was the only full bottle she took all day I think, the rest was only about 100 - 150mls
i've tried different teats, don't want to have to change formula, cause i've just brought a new tin, grrrrrrr
anyways better go and wake her for her first sryinging lol, :fingerscrossed: it goes alright and I can get something into her
S26 did the same with Wy. Argh, cant win, can ya :(
Wish they had a bigger range of samples for the fomulas, then you wouldn't have to buy the tines :hissy:
Good luck with it today hun, give me a call if you need a hand with anything :hugs:
How did you go today hun?

Hope things have picked up for you and bub :hugs: DD goes off her bottles when she is teething. We can go from 800mls down to 400mls some days and it usually lasts for a few days. I wouldn't change brands of formula too much cos that can upset there tummies. CHN told us to persist for 2 weeks on the one formula before changing it if needed and she also said that follow on formulas are unnecessary if they are on solids. I doubt it's the teats if you've been using them for 3 weeks and haven't had any probs but it doesn't hurt to try changing them if you run out of options. It is stressful and I too worry about DD being dehydrated everytime it happens to us but then she picks up again and it's all good. HTH :goodvibes:
Hi Jo, sorry to hear about the feeding problem with your dd.
My litttle one is a bad feeder latley too, she gets way too distracted and its a mission trying to get anything into her. Shes also sleeping alot more too during the day so maybe its a growth spurt?
With the formula, why dont you buy a few different sachets and try her with those instead of forking out money for a whole new tin?
How is she today? :hugs:

My bub was totally breastfeed too and had to swap to bottle. Don't worry too much. Bubs are like us sometimes we are just a bit off our food some days it could be teething, wind or just feeling a bit off color. Also my bub had a little regression from bottle feeding a week or two after the swap. Try feeding just before bub is due to wake so bub is still sleepy you can do it in the cot. My bub was totally breastfed aswell, i found his suck was so strong i had to drop the flow of the teat then what was reccommended for his age. I found the pigeon teats his favourite the tommee tippee teats collapsed alot when he sucked and that frustrated him. I also found Nan 1ha Gold the best formula after trying 4 different ones. You are offering the bottle regularly and when he is hungry he will eat. Hope this helps! They are all so different they sure keep us on our toes don't they, God love em!
