Hi All
My DD has very think poo (soorrrry TMI) and is straining, it is almost pebble like.
I want to avoid full blown constipation and need some information on the brown sugar remedy
How strong do you make it (1 tsp in 300mls?)
How much do you have ot give for it to work (10ml? or more)
How often do you give it (every meal?)
How soon before it works (on average - just after an idea on how long to monitor before I try something else)

Thanks for your help...Roxi:fingerscrossed:

How old is she? Is she breast or formula fed? I would tend to say don't give sugar, but try something else, but without knowing the babies age I don't want to suggest anything...

I was going to say exactly what Carlia said.

If she's old enough, pear juice apparently does the trick. Or (again, only if she's old enough) puree'd prunes. :)

She is 6 months old, formula fed with some solids being introduced (pureed fruit or vegies twice a day)
Are some fruits and vegies more constipating than others?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong here -

I think banana can bung up the bowels a little? Or is it the opposite LOL

Try some pear juice (diluted) or some puree'd prunes.

A way to find out what exactly is causing the constipation, is to just feed her one type of food for a couple of days, and see if things change or stay the same.

It could also be the formula? Have you switched brands, or maybe have you moved her up to the "6 months and older" brand now?

Although people will tell you that the brown sugar trick does certainly work, you do have to think of the nutritional aspect too. If something healthy will do the same thing, choose the healthy option

I used Brown sugar with Mikayla. and still do sometimes.

When she was a bub, i used 1 teaspoon to 300ml of warm water.

Good luck. You feel helpless when they are like that

I would try pear, prune or apricot puree.

I don't feed my son sugar, and especially wouldn't have at 6 mths.
Its just empty calories. It may lead to the child to cutting back on milk or other more nutritious food, as their caloric needs are being met another way (ie - the sugared water.)

Off to supermarket to get some apricot, prune juice
How much should I give? 10ml once a day?

We tried the brown sugar thing and it didn't work at all! We ended up getting microlax micro enemas and coloxyl drops from the chemist as a last resort because he was waking in the middle of the night screaming with pain and once there was even a tiny little smidge of blood. The enemas are really good because they give instant relief, like within 5 mins you have a full nappy!! Also the coloxyl drops help from the other end.

The question about the change of formula is a good one though. Bub got really constipated when we tried Karicare and then we put him on S26 and he was fine.

The enemas and coloxyl drops are just over the counter from the chemist. You feel a little cruel having to put it in their little bottoms but it does help and like I said it's instant relief.

Hope this helps chic!
