Levi arrived on 28 April 2008 at 6:44am. This is our birth story.
To truly appreciate the arrival of Levi we need to go back to when I was 29 weeks pregnant and my husband's sister rang to say she was engaged. The wedding date was set for 26 April and it was to be held about 2 hours drive from our place in an isolated mountain area. (Very beautiful - just not near to our house). She very cheerfully told me there was a hospital nearby and it was lovely! You can imagine what I was thinking. DS1 had been born after a labour of only a little over 2 hours and I had been warned that this baby would probably come faster.
So as the wedding drew closer and my anxiety levels grew the Ob just kept saying that he thought the baby would be born in April but as we all know it is not an exact science and he couldn't tell me when. I was determined that I would go to the wedding if the baby hadn't arrived as DH told me he would not leave me at home by myself.
So the 26th April came around and I was still pregnant and not much seemed to be happening. So off we drove to the wedding - in the middle of nowhere and with no mobile reception! We got through the wedding without any dramas (although a lot of comments) and drove home - arrived 11pm. At 3 am I woke up with some suspicious pains. These were not bad and continued regularly until 11am when they stopped completely. So that day we hung around home, went for walks, and did some work in the garden.
That night at about 7pm the pains started and continued although again not very bad. We were nervous however and by 10:30pm they were about 5 minutes apart so we went to the hospital just for a check. Once there the midwife confirmed that I was 3cm dilated and we had a chat about my history and decided I should stay for monitoring. So we went into a delivery suite and settled in but by about 1:30am it had all stopped again. The midwife said she felt like labour was imminent and she was hesitant to send me home as she felt that when it really started it would be fast. So I had a sleeping tablet and DH and I both went to sleep for a few hours. I was awake again at 5:30am with nothing happening. This was now the 28th - the midwife did another examination and nothing had changed. We agreed I should go home and she left the room to ring the Ob just to double check. It was now the 28th April (DH sister's birthday). So the midwife left the room and no sooner had the door clicked shut then I felt this enormous POP! followed by a massive contraction and my waters broke. I immediately felt a huge sensation of pressure and asked DH to call the midwife - we were not going anywhere! The baby was coming!
So the midwife runs back in and says "I knew it was going to be fast like this" and runs out to grab the Ob who just happened to be in the ward. A few very intense contractions and pushes later and Levi entered the world after a 50 minute labour! At 7lb 13oz I thought he was so fat compared to DS1 who was only 6lb.
DH's first words were "It's another boy!" and mine were "It's got rolls!". DH's next words were "Oh man - we we would have been on the highway." We were both thinking of how close we had been to going home.
I think I was in total shock for the next hour - everything was a big blur and I kept thinking of all that had happened and now there was a beautiful baby.
If we have any more children I am parking myself on the hospital doorstep from 38 weeks!
