I started having contractions on my due date. I was looking forward to meeting my little bub so much that I might just be imagining the contractions. They were only weak and about a hour apart. Silly me was actually hoping the pain would get worse just so I would know it was real!
The pain did get worse, and the contractions became a lot closer together. My DH began to panic a little and packed the car and paced the floor for a while.
I tried a hot water bottle, hot shower, nothing eased the pain, and more to the point nothing eased my fear. DH was timing my contractions and they were now 5 mins apart. We decided to call the hospital.
The lovely midwife informed us that it was probably way to early to come to hospital but if it would put my mind at ease I was more than welcome to go in for a check up.
We decided to hold off for as long as I could. About an hour later I couldnt bear the pain any more so we decided it was time to go.
It was about 1am on a Sunday night and on the way to the hospital we were pulled over by a police car for breath testing! I was so embarrassed I just hid my head the whole time. My husband had to explain why I was screaming and swearing!
We got to the hospital and I was hooked up to a machine that measured my contractions. I was so impressed to learn that the contractions were real and not just my imagination. Then I was told that i was only 1cm dilated and still just in 'pre-labour', and that I could be like this for a few days yet! I burst into tears. I couldnt imagine being in this kind of pain for days.
I was sent home with some sleeping tablets and pain killers - which were not too effective at the time but we tried to get some rest comforted by the fact that we would be meeting our baby sometime soon.
At 5:30am I jumped out of bed and ran to the bathroom where my waters broke. Such a strange feeling, I just felt this big bubble and knew it was going to burst. So we high-tailed it back to the hospital ant went straight into the birthing suite where I hopped straight into the shower.
The midwife left me and DH there for a while to settle in. It wasnt long though before I was screaming to my husband that the baby is coming. He called the midwife in who assured him that the baby is coming, but we could be there for a while yet. He replied 'are you sure becasue she seams pretty certain' so the midwife decided to take a look.
Next thing i heard was 'yep - full head of hair' and 'bring the blankets in here' and before I knew it my little baby girl was in my arms.
I thank pre-natal yoga classed from 16 weeks for such a speedy delivery.
In many was the labour was almost too quick because I went into a bit of shock afterwards. It really helped to talk to my DH about the birth because my view of what happened was quite distorted. I thought I was screaming and yelling at the midwife the while time, but DH assures me I was actually quite polite and the screams were no more than groans.
Overall it was quite a positive birthing experience and I wish all the best to all the expectant mums out there.
