We had an adjustable height cot, and DS climbed out of it and fell, so we had to move the matress down...We were unaware he could actually climb....
His playpen was a big square and tool up a large amount of rom, but was soo handy and we used it all the time until he was about 6 months maybe (only cos we moved and had a smaller area so didnt need one...as he couldnt go anywhere without me seeing him).
And he would stand up in the playpen, but never climbed out of it...or pushed it over.... So I would much prefer to leave him in the pen, which even if he did fall, there is less distance between where he is climbing over and the floor, whereas the cot sits a lot higher and had more distance between the 2.....
Being a toddler, I would still go the playpen for the above reason...less chance of serious injury if he was to climb out....
