View Full Version : Help - constipated baby
Ok I think DD is constipated, i've not long put her on formula full time, she hasn't been going very often, anyways tonight she was full on going red in the face and grunting/straining, my poor wee girl, what can I give her to help her go regulary? i'm going to go to the pharmacy tomorrow to get some coloxl drops(I think thats what its called)
i've never had a constipated baby before, so this is all new to me, so if anyone has some suggestions to help her out, that would be great
TIA

pear juice or stewed pears works well. Also try giving extra water to drink. I had the same problem with my DS who was formula fed. I found S26 always made him constipated but Nan 1 didnt.:)
Hi,
When my bubba was like that, i got told to give her lots of no nappy time, and it did help, don;t know why, more movement i suppose.

We had the same problems with my DS - so horrible to see them hurting and straining.
We used to give 1oz of once-boiled water (obviously cooled down:laughing:) before every feed. If that doesn't help you can add the very tiniest bit of orange juice.....literally a dash...so you can still see all the way through the water.
Prunes can help as well so I've been told but I never used them.
Hope she gets better soon.

hey. all my daughters have had problems with constipation. i used S-26 for all of them...then i found a special 'constipation formula' at the chemist and it worked like a dream.
however...before you try something like that..and definately BEFORE you try coloxyl...just give your daughter prune juice that has been diluted. it works sooo well. i really really recommend it.
the formula that worked so well for me is called: Novalac and they have a whole range for colic, allergies and so on.
I used coloxyl drops, but we have some consitpation issues here now because no health professionals would listen to me.... (DS is a BF baby, but had to use formula top ups for a little while..)
Try coloxyl drops. DONT use them for a long period as your bub's bowel could become lazy. If you have an improvement after a few days, then try and wean the coloxyl drops off. If you have problems for more than a few days to a week, or you want to hit the nail on the head asap, go and see your doctor.
I know that most babies have no troubles with the odd bout of constipation, but we're having to see a pead for it in a few weeks....
Good luck:)
Oh, and we also add water to any formula... usually about 10-20mls at EVERY feed. We were advised by doctors and MCHN's to do this, although I know alot of other people out there strongly reccomend against it.
Also, if you think it's the formula, try a different one, by try not to switch too often. We use NAN gold +bifdus, and it's the best one so far

Try Prune juice diluted in Water, that works a treat.

i would really avoid coloxyl unless nothing else works... which it will... because it can make the system 'lazy' and then you become dependant on it. my daughters were so constipated that they split once each when pooing...its awful i know...and the prune juice makes such a difference. because your daughter is not a new born you dont have to dilute the juice that much. try it half strength initially and see how that goes. also massaging belly after a nice warm bath. around the belly button. if you look at the belly button as the center of the 'clock' then start rubbing at seven o clock and then go in a clockwise direction. hope that helps.
