Hi there. My 17mth DS will only sleep for 45min total when he is at daycare. The four days we are at home he easily sleeps from 11-2 (3hrs!) with no dramas. Everytime I pick him up from daycare they tell me he has only slept for 45min. So when we get home he is so over tired he barely eats his dinner and just screams until I put him to bed. I am worried about it because it is obviously affecting his time at daycare and when we get home from daycare. Has anyone else had problems like this? I have tried to problem solve with the carers at daycare but they offered no solutions. All suggestions would be appreciated.

Just guessing, if im wrong someone correct me...

But maybe he just excited about all the other kids being around... maybe its an overstimulating place to sleep (at daycare)

I see it all the time when kids first start, and for anywhere up to 6 months. While they are happy throughout the day, they become a little upset at rest time, perhaps because it gives their little brains some time to wonder where Mum is? I'm never sure what goes on, but that's all I could think of. What I tend to do is after a while if they are not sleeping, or if they wake up after 45 minutes and won't resettle, I'll move them to a comfy cushion with a couple of books so they are still resting, rather than get them up to play like some carers tend to do. I found that lots of times they go back to sleep again and after a while they start sleeping right through. We're actually not allowed to let the children sleep past 2 which I think is wrong, fair enough in the over 3 rooms but some little ones still need more sleep and I don't like waking them up just because the clock says it's 2pm. Most are awake by then, but those that aren't I'd like to leave until they wake up naturally. Maybe suggest that they allow your child have books on a cushions? Do you know what they do once he is awake? Do they give him toys and stimulate him?

When they wake up they are put in a room with toys etc so they are stimulated. I might suggest putting him down on a cushion that sounds like a really good idea because a least he will be resting. Thanks so much for your advice, fingers crossed!
