I am damn sure I have nipple thrush. I have horrible stabby pains in my breast (particularly the left one, which also has whitish patches on it) and feeding is just awful pain. I can't get out to a chemist at the moment, is there anythign I can do for temporary relief?:(

Also, what treatment is suitable for a six week old bub? And how long will it take to clear up once I start treatment?

Bummer Rob.. both boys in bed? Dont want to come here and get some stuff do you??

You need to be diagnosed first, see a GP asap.

Then oral daktarin will fix it up in a jiff

poor you :hugs:

:hugs::hugs:It did me in. My toes curl every time someone asks about nipple thrush.

You can try some plain yoghurt.

Here are my nipple thrush tips, which Ihoned after 4 or 5 bouts of it when feeding DS:

* you will need to get some daktarin topical treatment (cream or oral drops) - apply after every feed. YIf you choose the cream which is more effective, you should wipe it off though before putting baby on. The oral drops don't work as fast (in my experience) but don't need to be wiped off before feeding bubs.

* treat bubs too, as you could be passing it back and forth to one another. Try Nilstat or Daktarin oral - talk to the Chemist.

* you may need to use nipple shields for a day if the pain is very bad.

* let your nipples dry off before putting your top/bra back on after feeds.

* Put white vinegar in your fabric softener dispenser in your washing machine to try and kill the bug in your clothes.

* change your bra every day and use breast pads, change them after every feed.

* don't use Lansinoh, paw paw ointment or anything like that on your nipples - these creams have natural sugars that promote thrush growth.

* if you get some engorgement happening because of the thrush, do try the cabbage leaves - it works a treat and shouldn't flare the thrush up.

I hope it clears up for you. And try and keep your eyes peeled form now on - unfortunately once you've had it it's more likely to bless you again.

:hugs:

ETA - it should start to be bearable within 24 hours of starting treatment but keep going with the cream or drops for 5 - 7 days.

I agree with the daktarin gel, put on you then feed bubs, so that he gets it in his mouth. Also recommend diflucen 1. I had this when DD3 was only a few weeks old. Hope it clears up quickly for you :hugs:

In addition to the treatments that a doctor will prescribe (probably canestan cream for you and Daktarin gel/Nilstat Oral drops for the little one), do some or all of the following:

Vitamin D. Lots of it. 1000mgs every 2 -4 hours for 48 hours.

Wash all your clothes as normal and then put some antifungal rinse in during the final rinse cycle (by Canestan, in the same aisle as athelete's foot treatments in the chemist).

Take pro-biotics. Best bought at a health food store where they are kept in the fridge.

Leave breasts to air dry. Thrush doesn't like being exposed to the elements and LOVES to be in the warm, dark, moist environment of a lactating woman's bra.

If the pain in the breast in significant and lasts for without any improvement for too long, get yourself back to a doctor and request aggressive treatment. That means Diflucan 1 tablets, which they can prescribe for far cheaper than you would buy. You need to take 2 for the first day of the treatment and then one every day for something like a week.

You poor thing :hugs: You have my complete understanding on how much it all sucks. It will get better, though. I hope that happens really soon.
