View Full Version : SHould we get allergy testing done
Hi all
my dd is two years old and has eczema since a tiny baby, she has it on birth her upper arms, and both her thighs, it does not bother her but seems quite mild, i wonder weather it is worth getting alergy testing done? I wonder this after the weekend hearing that allergys and eczema are realted, I would feelterrible if she was allergic to something and that was why she was covered in eczema but feel terrible putting her through the testing if it is not that serious? Has anyone been in a situation like us?
We currently bath her in things the doc has reccomended, and are not using anything that would make it worse and have been doing this since day 1. I cant think of what else to do!
Her eczema is very noticable, and seems painful... but doesnt bother her!!
I dont no what to do! pLease help
Hi
I think it is worthwhile esp as (it seems) the measures you have taken have not reduced or eliminated it.
The more info you have the better the chance to avoid the allergen (if there is one).
Skin prick tests are not painful, DS hates his arm being held down more than the test itself.
It has been invaluable to us to know how to handle his allergy and intolerances and as a result it has significantly improved (although not gone).
Good luck

Hi,
We have almost exactly the same situation (fairly extensive eczema that doesn't seem to affect DS2) and have decided to get a skin prick test done. Although some people say that just about everyone will come up with a reaction to something on a test. However, I feel as it is something I have been wondering about it is worth doing to have the information. After that we will decide what we do. In Brisbane I have almost a months wait to get an appointment to have the test done!!!
As is doesn't seem to affect DS2 I was even wondering if it really was eczema but the DR has said yes.
I have already taken him off dairy and put him on rice milk and noticed the eczema is not as "angry" and red.
Good luck with it.

I believe that eczema is a symptom of an underlying problem and it is important to attempt to find the problem in order to treat it. The skin prick test is one option, it works through your child's nervous systems response to some of the more popular allergens, but I believe it is a very limited test and will only show up extreme responses. Paeds often use it as this is a 'scientific test' and therefore choose to overlook the limitations. There are obviously many systems in the body that respond to allergens, or your child might have several less severe responses to allergens that do not show up on the test but nonetheless create problems for your child. The other option is VEGA testing done through a naturopath or maybe a FAILSAFE elimination diet.
I also believe that the origin for eczema is in the digestive system and therefore attention to creating a healthy gut is the key. So probiodics and avoiding foods that create candida can also be very useful.
Good luck.

i think 2 is a little young, its not a pleasent thing to get allergy tested. if it doesnt bother her then theres no need to worry, just keep putting moisturising cream on her every 2 hrs or bath her 3 times a day in bath oils, i use hamilton or alpha keri products, they work really well for me. i hope this helps you :)
