I have just been having a look on a website and they currently have a few good specials on MCN's. I am looking to get my newborn stash started and am wanting all your experienced advice on whether you would give any of the following a try?

haute one size pocket breathables

baby kangas pockets

bambineo bamboo fitteds

Dream-Eze Organic Cotton

Kissaluv Fitted Unbleached

Kissaluvs Coloured Nappies

Pocket Change Pocket Nappies

Anything here you would recommend?

many thanks - kate

Also - what does anyone think of bummis or bamboozles or bumgenius or motherease for starting out with a newborn?

Hautes - fantastic! Love the choice of snap or velcro and also love the colour range. Prefer this brand over Bumgenius because it has a nicer lining (suede fleece gave my daughter a rash) and also because it's an Aussie brand. Hautes are a bit bulky on newborns and have more success once baby has put on a bit of weight (especially around the legs).

Kissaluvs - only ever tried one of the coloured fitteds but wasn't that fussed with them. The sizing is very generous (too big for my little girl) but it didn't leak and was still absorbent, but I just don't think the fit was good enough.

Dream-Eze - love this nappy for the fabric and the fit. Very trim and comfy and I'm a big fan of side-snappers. I've used this at night with an extra hemp booster with success.

Bambineo - The biggest rise on a nappy I've ever seen! This nappy is for babies with huge chubby thighs. I bought one in the right size with velcro fastening (which I wouldn't do again... velcro is not great on fitteds IMHO), but the rise is so high that I can't do it up properly. I have to fasten the two arms together then pull the front flap up and over the front and hold it all together with a cover. It's lovely and soft and comes with an extra booster (which I use in other nappies as well) but the fit was terrible on a petite child.

Kangas - didn't like this one at all because it was really bulky and the zipper across the front doesn't sit flat across their tummy... it tends to come out the sides like wing droop.

Pocket Change - good value for money. The insert does come out in the wash as they claim. Great nappy for daycare or days when you don't care how dirty they get because it's quite durable but not so "pretty" that you want to keep it looking good for a long time.

Bummis - fantastic brand... have used almost all of the range with no complaints, good value for money.

Bamboozles - beautiful nappy (get the snappi version) and really absorbent. Only downside was that I forgot it wasn't good to put in a dryer and I cooked the fibres a bit so it's not as soft as it once was.

Haven't tried Kissaluvs Contours, but only because I thought they were expensive and prefer prefolds for little ones.

My other favourite brands are Swaddlebees, Baby Beehinds and Nappy Chappies.

I have heard good about kissaluvs on a newborn.
Not sure about pockets on a newborn.
Bamboozles are good. I used them on Av but they seem thay would be just as good on a nb

I am due in 8 weeks and have been studying up on all the different opinions on mcn's. What is your opinion on the following for newborns. Am worried they may not fit at first.
6 Green Kids anytimes
6 Bum Genius One size 3.0
Then I thought maybe some prefolds incase the others are too big to start with. Though not sure which ones would be good.
My husband suggested only buying 3 of each until we see what we prefer and use disposables in between til we work it out.
I am wanting to buy OSFA nappies generally so I can use them all the way through.
What do you guys suggest?:)

I would have a look at Rolicking Rascals based on other OSFAs it seems smaller in the small setting and they are reasonably priced (not to mention a little groovy lol) :)

Frazzled- I haven't tried many of these brands on a newborn but though that I would let you know what I will be using on our second baby (who btw is due 2 days after you!)
we will use Itti Bitti D'lish, cute tooshies (seem a good size for a new baby), and will have prefolds and covers for the bulk of the time. I did get some Kissaluv contours but there didn't seem to be enough absorbancy so I will use prefolds instead and boost with some hemp if needed)

I think the Greenkids might be a bit big on a newborn- I tried some on my skinny bub at 4 months old and they looked huge! The bumgenius would be better- though having said that I am not planning to use the Bumgenius that I have on the new baby until it is out of the newborn stage.

Hope this helps!

I'm 7 weeks into doing cloth on a newborn.

I'm time limited so I'll just tell you what I have found.

From your list I have tried:
Kissaluvs fitteds - great nappy. They fit right from day 1. After about 5 weeks I needed to boost but the fit is so great that I can overlook this. I have a couple of coloured ones and some unbleached. The coloured ones are def getting crunchier quicker than the unbleached.
OSFA pockets (baby kanga / bumg etc) These were way too big for my liking. Seriously they swam on my bub. The worst thing was trying to get the legs tight on them with a squirming "breakable" newborn! I would not recommend them...however some people probably will!

Fitteds I can recommend:
Bambams. These come from bubblebubs. They are awesome! They are bamboo but still really trim. God I love them!

AIOs I can recommend:
-Bubblebubs! I have just sold practically my whole stash of nappies and now only have bubblebubs.
-BumG. You probably wont get many people recommending them. But they are a great fit and as easy as pie to put on.

General recommendations:
-Go with velcro. Trying to put snaps on with a squirmy baby sucks!
-Make yourself or buy some little boosters (about the size of a BBB small insert). These lay nicely inside newborn nappies and add the extra absorbency needed in the small newborn nappies
-Trim is not good! I tried itti d'lish. Talk about pooplosions. The first couple of times they were ok but then we had a run of leaks. Massive leaks!

Thanks for all those suggestions. I haven't looked at bubblebubs yet, so will have a look. Seems like I just need to try a few different ones and really maybe just wait and see how big our little bub turns out to be! :)

sorry typing one handed while feeding so this wont be a big post but i just had to say a few things

1. defintaly go with valcro! snaps are awful on a newborn!

2. get AIOs!! iv found that they are the first nappy i go for, simply because time is so limited with a 2.5yo and a newborn that at least with AIOs i dont have to pull the insert out to wash it and dont have to worry abot re stuffing them...

my fav newborn mcn has turned out to be the one i didnt think i would like, magicalls!!!

I've got eight weeks to go but went a little bit crazy with Baby Beehind's ebay sale of AIOs and bought about 40 of them. Lol. They're totally gorgeous, look quite fitted and have velcro not snaps. I also have 12 Bumgenius one-size with inserts for nights. I'm looking forward to seeing how they go. I hope they're good because in my second trimester delirium I spent about $500 and I'll be spewing if they're no good.

My cousin uses BBHs though and loves them so there's a start! Plus I was super impressed with their customer service.

LOL Chesby that's a lot of magicalls! But I can't talk, I bought about 10 as well!

Frazzled: I used kissaluvs contours for the early days (from day 4 to 1 month - i was in hospital first few days), but now I use them for stuffing nappies coz they aren't absorbent enough on their own. I REALLY like my kissaluvs fitteds, I still use them at 3 months on my little one, but I have always boosted them. Everyone recommends gusseted covers, Bummis makes some now, but I never used gusseted covers (I used bummis) and the cover caught all the poos, all my leaks have been from AIOs and pockets.

Optimistic: I found that Haute's were a bit better fit around the legs on a newborn than the BGs but the BGs were ok too. Better colour choices on the hautes was one reason i liked them better, but I found that they look "used" after a few washes, as compared to BGs which still have a new look after a few washes. Doesn't affect their use though! The GKs were HUGE on my little one, but they fit but boy did it look funny.

I have used Bamboozles and found them great. I even used size 2 all the way through and just folded the front down when my lo was small.
The only prob I've had with bamboozles is that eventually the fabric has become quite difficult to fasten with a snappi. But I got 2 years full-time use out of them before this happened!!
They were a great investment as they've even coped overnight on my 2 year old without any leaks ever!!

With my newer bub I bought some second hand cotton totsbots in size 1 and they have been great on her even as a newborn.

I also have some BBH with are great. The snaps are a good choice if you want to use them when bubs are bigger as they find them much harder to remove themselves than velcro/snappis. I have found BBHs don't cope as well overnight on my toddler, but otherwise fantastic nappy. I was suprised how well they fit both my newborn and my toddler.

Just a cover thought as well..

I would really recommend gusseted covers on newborns. They catch more poo and they don't wick around the edges and make bubs clothes wet.

My favourite covers for newborns are Motherease Rikki and Thirsties PUL covers.
I bought some BBH PUL covers as others seem so happy with them but I really don't like them. They have a great fit, but mine wick everytime meaning I have to change DDs whole outfit usually whenever her nappy is wet. And I would just need more of them as I can't reuse them for more than one nappy change.

The only ones from your list I've used are Bamboozles, which I used on Lincoln from when he was about 4 weeks old. I found them to be fantastic.

BabyBeehinds have great prefolds .

TBH, I'd get a bit of variety. I had 3 bamboozles, one hand made fitted from my IRL friend, a small BBH MagicAll and terry flats. Plus, he fit into GK's from about 8 weeks on. I was happy to have a variety, and also happy to have not spent so much on small nappies. He was too big for all of those so quick!

I didn't have any of the BBH prefolds, but saw one IRL the other week, and they look good... (and super easy to use - no fiddling around with folds!) I'd get a couple of them next time round for sure.

HTH :)
