Do you have a price limit? Do you have to travel with the gift?

Umm, bro is an Engish Literature teacher, and loves books, music, cricket, poetry. SIL-to-be is also quite artistic - does mosaics, painting.

Price? Maybe $500?? I'm in country WA and the wedding will be in Perth, but I have Perth people who could pick stuff up for me etc...

Where are they honeymooning? Maybe you could add on a special excursion? Or if you could club together with other family members, buy them a separate trip altogether - a post-honeymoon honeymoon or something!

Maybe you could give them a week at some sort of artists retreat? Him to write, her to paint, something like that?

Personally, of all the wedding presents I got, its the 500 TC sheets that still make me groan with pleasure every time I have them on the bed. (And they are still in great shape nearly a decade on!)

Books - a first edition of something, maybe some love poetry and if she is an artist, one with plates.

Umm, need to think more...

Seriously though, gosh, best wedding present ever ever for us was our gorgeous jarrah outdoor furniture setting for eight. It's a huge rectangular table, with lovely chairs and it makes dinner parties in summer just divine. It was expensive though.

Ohhh, what about an artwork? Go to a gallery somewhere and find something funky by a local artist.

Do you want to give them something they will have forever... like artwork

or something that will be a lasting memory, like an experience? ie: a hot air balloon ride

Do you have a preference?

Still thinking....

Would they be interested in Pop-Art portraits? You get a photo of them and turn into a cartoon like print.

Do they like jigsaw puzzles. We bought my BIL (who loves them) one for his birthday of his daughter. We had to order it from America to get a really large one (1500 pieces) but it turned out great.

I am usually good at getting presents but I have to know the person.

One of our fave pressies that we got for our wedding was a paper tiole wall hanging....it was hand made by the person who gave it to us and would have taken hours, but you can get them made and they are amazing. Ours is frangipani flowers.

If you are not sure what I mean, it is a picture that is built up to become 3D...I am trying to google it but not having much luck.

That said- I am a big fan of original artwork, perhaps you could get a local artist to do something for you.

What about the Fremantle Arts Centre in Freo for art? We have bought a few pieces of art from there for weddings.

Or Form, which is good if you want original glass work and they have some other Western Australian original art too.

Books I would try the Trinity Arcade Bookshop (I think that is what it is called?) or Mainly Books in Bulwer Street.

The other thought I had was that this year's vintage of Grange is supposed to be an absolute cracker. A bottle of that would set you back about $550 but would be a unique gift to be put aside for their 20th wedding anniversary. You could also get the bottle engraved.

My Mum got a gift voucher to have one of their wedding photos lasered into crystal. It was really pretty and unusual. Otherwise maybe one of their wedding photos put on canvas??

My fav gift was our Stuart crystal linear side rest decanter and glasses. Its so unusual being a cone shape and looks great with Bombay Gin in it :D

Bottle of grange is a great idea!! Or, a bottle of the year that they met is another option.

As for galleries, there is a great one in Subi, but can't remember the name. It's in behind Clancy's fish pub. It's where my in laws bought our wedding present from.

I don't know about art.... people have immensly different tastes in art and you might get something that one or both of them doesn't really like.

Where are they getting married?
If it's a church or something, how about contacting a photographer and getting them to do a shoot out there? Some artsy black and white stuff. Then you can frame prints or get them printed on canvas.
Similar to artwork, but with a special meaning (place of marriage) and black and white architectual photography is usually liked by all (or at least not disliked!)

ETA: Or a really lovely mirror, a large one to hang on the wall. Again, like artwork, but they'd be sure to like it.

:D

You might have some trouble finding a bottle, so if you are interested I would be hitting the phones soon.

I seem to remember hearing on the radio that all the Woolworths Liquor stores got two bottles each but they may have sold out. If so, you could try calling La Vigna in Mount Lawley. If Michael doesn't have any he can probably source a bottle.
