Hey Ladies,
Im getting moved down To Wagga Wagga to be with DF in 6 weeks and am about to get access to homefind.
Ive been told by a few people that theres never much available in Wagga defence house wise and I may have to go into a private rental.
If so, how much of your rent does the defence force usually pay? is it similar to what rent you would pay in a defence house? like say you rented a house for $330 per week...how much would you actually end up paying??
thanks for any help

DHA have a rental ceiling based on DH's rank and the type of housing entitlement you have. Standard is a 3 bed house, but you can elect to have a smaller ceiling (and I assume contribution) and a 2 bed place...or if you are entitled to a bigger house (as we are), then you get an extra 10% per extra bedroom needed added to your ceiliing.
DH will get the difference between the market rent and your contribution (which is same as MQ) in his pay each fortnight and your would have to pay rent as per any private rental.
Hope this helps, sorry don't know the actual figures for rent ceilings at present, but someone at DHA will be able to tell your DH what it is, if there is nothing available on homefind.

Hi Pennylane,
Try this link to the DHA Rental Allowance Calculator, you just have to enter location, rank and bedroom allowance and you should get an approximate answer.

Hope this helps.

Thanks guys!!
Just found out our removal date has gone up by a week and they arent letting DF come home now to help me like he was told he could!
better get my butt into gear lol
Love that calculator !! My friend on another forum has to pay RA and it's above the rental ceiling and she curses all the time about it. So don't fall into that hole and have to pay more out of your own pocket.

so if my rental ceiling is like $344 as it says...the trick is to rent a place that costs that or less than that??? so you dont end up paying more out of pocket?
is that right? im just trying to feel my way here lol

If that is the amount that comes up on the calculator $344 ceiling that try not to go above that, you use to be able to write a letter asking for the ceiling to be increased as there were no rentals for that amount, not sure if you can still do that. Otherwise anything above your ceiling you have to pay. Good old housing!!!

Excellent that you got a house, much easier than having to go RA. We are moving to Ballarat at the end of the year and apparantly not many houses there. Hope we don't have to go RA.
Good luck in Wagga.

yeh im really relieved! Ive been looking at Homefind like 10 times a day for the last few weeks and there was always nothing! And then today I wasnt going to bother, thinking 'nah theres never anything' and i thought id check just incase and there was two houses available so lucky I looked!! I picked the one in the more family friendly area and its perfect for DF as it has double garage with a 2nd roller door going out into the backyard with trailer access. As he re-builds old holdens and takes them to car shows.so He will be thrilled. He's away at the moment so doesnt know we have a house yet.
Its our 1st house together (weve only lived in units since living together) so its very exciting!
