Sorry for yet another thread on this but I'm not really up to date on the latest reports and info. We use NUK bottles and teats for DD and we microwave sterilise them. Can someone please tell me if NUK are safe? Does microwaving make them worse? DD is 9 months should we stop sterilising to avoid any further harm? Sorry for all the ??? but I don't really understand BPA and what it is or how ot's triggered? I know that NUK have glass bottles to but I'm a clutz and I know i'll break them. Help please :dizzy:
As far as I am aware the info in the previous threads are still current
Nuk has BPA
Microwaving does release the BPA

I've looked through all the previous threads and I think I understand it a bit more but its still doing my head in :dizzy:. Went to traget today to buy new bottles and they didn't have any that I could find a number on?? There were heaps of Nuk ones but we know that they're not safe!! Also checked the Nuk dummies and found that they are BPA free but came across so many articles claiming that Nuk dummies are choking hazards?? Now I'm at my wits end. Can't find any safe bottles to buy and if we continue to use the BPA free Nuk dummies she might choke :banghead: Does anyone know where I can get safe bottles with orthodontic teats?? Dummies too please? Because Nuk are all we have at the moment should I avoid sterilising? Sorry for all the ??? but I'm really at a loss :hair:

As far as I know, Medela have a BPA free bottle (try somewhere that sells the breast pumps, as I got one with my pump) and you can use the regular NUK teats with them.
My DS used the NUK first choice, but would take the regular nuk teats if I had run out of bottles.
You can get Grow baby bottles that are BPA free. They make two sorts. I know the 150ml and the 250ml ones are safe. Don't know what sort of teats come with them. I think the worry is with Nuk is the bottle. So guess you could use the nuk teats with the grow bottles.
You can buy them off the net at www.grbaby.com.au (http://www.grbaby.com.au/). There all so under $5.00 each so the price is good.

Hey thanks for that :) Just had a look but it doesn't say what plastic it is made from. Have you used them? Do you know what # is on them?
No Number on them. I ring them up and they said there safe (the two which I listed before). I all so have a letter that they sent out to me. They are made of Food grade polypropylene, Not polycarbonate. Icon's raw material supplier Basell has confirmed for Icon that no bisphenol A used in the production of there polypropylene.
There bottles are slightly opaque/cloudy colour, bottal wall is soft enough to squeeze
Packaging states Made from Polypropylene.
They are more then happy to get phone calls about there bottles. They will tell you which ones they sell that are safe. (If you want to hear it from them). Phone number on web site.
They have a wide neck one, which is the unsafe one. I have 3 of there safe bottles. Was given them. Hope that helps

Yep that helps heaps thanks CJ. I'll give them a buzz tomorrow and maybe order a couple and see how we go. I'm going to go hunting around baby shops too and harass the poor sales people . I'm stressed to the max about it as all of our bottles (we have 7) are all NUK and naturally I have to feed her but now that I know they are bad I don't want to! Need to get it sorted asap. Thanks again for your help :D
The following bottles & sippies contain it:
Baby bottles and sippy cups.
AVOID bottles such as Dr. Brown’s, Avent, clear Evenflo, FirstYears, Platex VentAire, Sassy and TupperCare as they are all contain bisphenol A. On the sippy cup side, avoid Nuby cups with handles coming up from the bottom of the cup, Gerber Soft Starter, and Gerber Suzy’s Zoo & Sippy Snacker.
BPA-free bottles and sippies flagged as safe include: glass bottles, Born-Free, Medela breastmilk storage bottles (made with polypropylene) and disposable bottle systems that have polyethylene plastic inserts.
And for sippies: Avent Magic Cup, Born-Free, FirstYears Take & Toss, Gerber Color Change, Munchkin Cupsicle, Sigg Baby Water Bottle, and Playtex Sipster. I also called Luv N Care, makers of the Nuby sippies. Their cups are made with #5 plastic except for the cup with the handles coming up from the bottom. The straw sipper’s sliding closure is also a polycarbonate piece, but since it is not touching liquid, it is considered safe. However, my daughter chews on this, so we will not be using this cup. There are many stainless steel varieties as well such as Kleen Kanteen and Thermos Foogo sippy cup, though these are much more expensive. Avoiding aluminum cups for your child would be recommended as aluminum has been linked to other health issues, including Alzheimer’s.

The MAM brand of BPA free bottles are now available at Target stores. I have been using them for just over 2 months now, they are fabulous!

I use Avent Magic cup - available every where, is a sippy but can be used as a bottle. I removed the magic spout and use pigeon wide neck teats. Compatible with all other Avent products for feeding. About $12-13 per cup. No handle ones have measurement levels on side but I still use a jug to measure amounts accurately. Bit pricey but I had other avent products and so knew could interchange things.
I was going to buy the MAM ones about $24 for 3 bottles but as I would have had to get DS used to new teats I changed my mind.

you could probably stop sterilizing bottles at 9 months anyway- I stopped at 4 months and my bub has hardly been sick. Hot soapy water and a good rinse should do the trick
also when heating formula if you do, dont use the microwave. DD only has her morning bottle slightly warm now the rest room temp, so what I do is boil a jug of water before I go to bed, so that its ready to use in the morning, only before putting it in the bottles I turn the kettle on just for a tiny bit enough to warm the water a bit, then pour that into the bottle (hope that made sense)
is it the actual heating of the plastic that makes it hazardous? or the use of a microwave? just a thought because wouldnt placing them in hot water do the same thing?

I've just bought the MAM BPA free bottles but they don't have a disc? Does anyone know how I should mix formula without a disc? I bought some that fit but they are labelled #7. Is is safe to use them to mix the formula if the water is cold? Or is #7 just a no no in every way? :dizzy:
Another concern is the teats that came with the MAM bottles. One of them is labelled #7 and the other two say #5. I thought that if the teats were silicone then they were ALL good?

As far as I understand any heat to the bottle, teat, etc is an issue whether it's water or microwave. I may be wrong?
Thanks for all of your help ladies :hugs: :hugs: Please keep the advice/suggestions coming.
Geez - really no 7!!!!! Thought silicone was ok too
Number 5 ok but 7 apparently not
Number 7 disc should be ok for mixing if the water is room temp or cold, that is how I mix then warm the bottle in hot water without the disc. Have you tried mixing with teat in and lid on? Maybe Ok if you shake vertically and don't tip up side down
Just checked my teats - they are 5
Good luck

Thanks loui999, I really appreciate your help :flowerz: I will use the discs for mixing then take them straight out and I will go and find teats that fit today that don't have a #7 on them. It's all been quite streesful and confusing but I'm getting there. Thanks again everyone xxx
