Does anyone know the approx cost to hire one of these in Sydney. I bought a convertible car seat for my DD when she was born but am thinking for bubs due in Oct that a capsule might be the way to go. DD always woke up when taking her out and so when visiting or say quick trips to the shops I thought it might be good to have the capsule. So I guess my question is does it cost much and in general are they a good idea?

In Adelaide they cost $70 for 6 months.
I think they are fantastic. You can leave bubs asleep in them when getting them out of the car when visiting, shopping etc (they fit very nicely sideways on the trolley - or in it - when you have a toddler in the seat!).

My kids still today can stay asleep when being transferred from car to bed. My niece and nephew who had the car seat as babies used to always wake up on arrival somewhere, and now they are still quite sensitive to transferring when sleeping.

Could just be the kids though, but I loved using the capsule.

I actually bought a capsule for my first (it came with a pram travel system), and I absolutely loved it! Its worth it just for easy transport!
Not sure how much hire is though.

I kinda thought it was bulky and awkward to carry around with Vallerie in it. I wish I'd known about baby-wearing back then!
I'm hiring one (and yes, $70 for 6 months plus a $20 fitting fee, that's the cheapest I could find it) for the car obviously, because it's the safest way to transport bub in the car (plus illegal not to have one!) but I'll be slinging bub as often as I can. Interesting fact: in USA they're referred to as "baby buckets", I think that sounds awful!

Oooh baby buckets, that sounds really yucky!

we were going to hire one but decided that it was cheaper in the long run to buy a convertable car seat, rather than paying $50-$70 for 6 months, only to spend another $200 on a car seat anyway when they're beyond the capsule.

My SIL ended up buying us a car seat anyway!

Scuze my ignorance, but can someone explain the difference to me?

We haven't started shopping for this yet but we have two cars so which would be the best for us? Is a capsule an in-and-out thing for newborns?

A car seat is a fixed to the vehicle, whereas a capsule you can lift out of the base and carry with you.
(my particular capsule you can buy extra bases for, so you can put one in both cars and just move the capsule around with you)

And Shed, you can get a "travel system" where the capsule thingo snaps onto the pusher. My cynical AP mind would like to add "that way, you don't have to touch the poor little bubba at all" but it is handy if the baby is asleep and you want him/her to stay that way.

:)

ETA: by saying "you don't have to touch ..." etc I didn't mean YOU personally Shed :o I meant you as in "one"; "one needed touch the baby at all".... Oh perhaps I should just shut my cynical mouth!!!

Thats like what we had. Our capsule could connect into the pram. We only used it if she was sleeping and we didnt want to disturb her. The capsule was so cosy though, much nicer than a big open pram. Especially when she was newborn.

   Thank goodness, for a minute there I thought I was going to actually have to get icky BABY-COOTIES!!!

Sounds like the capsule would be the go for us then. Gosh, so much to learn.

We bought a carseat AND hired a capsule. That way, if for whatever reason we couldn't use one of them, then we had the other.

I think hiring out a capsule is a great idea. That way, you don't need to buy a carseat until you need it. They can cost quite a bit - and you can afford it AFTER the government gives you the maternity payment - but you will need a carseat for bubs just as soon as you want to leave the hospital (and you won't have your payment by then).

For those who aren't too wealthy - hiring a capsule for 6 months (I paid $60 in QLD and it was brand new) is a way to put off the cost of an expensive car seat for a while. I also found it more difficult to put bub in the reversible car seat...

I have seen the hired ambulance type ones on ebay which look pretty good for about $50 i got mine from a garage sale perfect cond. for $30 and had the ambulance offices look it over for free. It also fits every pram I have!
