View Full Version : Would you work away instead?
Hi Ladies Would you consider working away on the mines and the hubby stays home and looks after the children ?
My DP has given that option to me to do this as it will be the only way I can earn around the same income as him here in Perth as I am not qualified in anything and I have always asked/nagged him for me to work instead. Dp suggested 2/1 roster.
Do you know any females doing this I know there is females working up there but as a family lady ?
Would you think it will work ? He said he can take time off his job and so I can if I get a job to try it out. I think it would be tough on the kids though.

Plenty of women work in the mines, some mines have just as many female staff as males.
I'm not so sure about women with children, all the girls I know who've worked away stopped when they had their children.
Do you mean you would work one week a away and then your hubby would work the opposite week away?
I wouldn't do that because when would you have time with your hubby?
If you mean you work away and your Hubby works at home.
Then thats something I would consider but only when my son was older.
I think if you have really little ones it would be too hard for them, They need their mummy.
But if it's purely because you want to make money but don't have the skills.
Then Working in the mines may not be the best options.
Skilled workers get paid well in the mines but it's different for unskilled workers.
Because of the mining boom alot of people are under the impression that their is HUGE bucks to be made.
This is not always the case.
My hubby works away because he is a trained professional his job can't be done anywhere else but the mines. This is what he's studied to do. He gets a descent salary but we certainly aren't rolling in it, far from it.
If you want to work but don't have many skills or training you maybe surprised at the jobs you can get without much experience.
Cleaners are very well paid and you usually don't need too much training.
An inbound call center attendant is an excellent job. I worked inbound for Coca-cola with no experience and was paid $25 an hour.
The beauty of inbound too is people call you no selling or cold calling or any of those horrible jobs.
Swan taxi's are always advertising.
There are plenty of jobs out there for unskilled or unexperienced workers.
You may find you could get paid quite well without having to be away from your family.
Good luck with your job hunting
I worked for the first 2 years of DD1's life whilst my husband was a SAHD. He did a wonderful job. My daughter didn't miss out on anything. I however was a bit of a wreck. I found it hard to deal with my DD wanting Dad and not me when she was upset. I'd get jealous even though I understood. But at least I got to see her everynight. My husband is also unskilled and so the only way he could return to work and have me stay at home was to wotk in the mines. He's a truck driver and there are many women who do this. Even 2 with kids that he's mentioned to me. Some companies prefer women driving as they seem to handle the repetition and long hours better. It's normal $ per hour but you work 12 hours a day, every day. Thats where the money comes in.
My philosophy is there's no harm in trying. If you don't like it, quit. At least then you'll know for sure if you can handle it or not. The only way to really know is just to do it.
Good luck!
