I have been asked by my ob to start taking low dose asprin because of my history of pregnancy induced hypertension. I am 13 weeks. I am taking the cartia brand.

Just wondering if there is anyone else who has taken low dose asprin during pregnancy and what sort of side effects did you have, if any at all. And were there any birth complications, was bub ok. Thanks:)

Hey - sorry to crash, but just thought I would offer some reassurance.

Taking low dose saspirin during pregnancy (and ttc) is quite common. You should have no side effects - if you do contact your Ob. Make sure you dont take them on an empty tummy - but other than that you should be quite fine.

There should not be any issues or complications with birth by it, and aspirin is safe to take whilst bf ....

Hi Mikeysmum,

I am not pregnant atm! but had PE and HELLP in my last pregnancy leading to premature delivery of my son and the OBs mentioned asprin may help in my next pregnancy. I will be watching this thread with interest to see if works, side effects etc.

Hope all goes well!

Ive been taking aspirin this whole pg, so far. :yes:I lost my little girl at 18wks. They think it may be from the fact that i have factor 5 leiden, which causes blood to clot. Her placenta had clots throughout it. So i have to take aspirin to thin my blood, preventing the clots from forming. I havent had any side effects from taking it, except when i knick myself i bleed a bit more than normal. If you have any concerns you should consult your dr!

I've been on aspirin since 13 weeks as well. I'm nearly 20 weeks pregnant now. Again, for a previous history of preeclampsia. My doctor has also put me on calcium supplements as well - apparently this may have a marked effect on preeclampsia.

The only small problem I noticed was that when I went in for a blood test, I didn't stop bleeding as quickly as I usually would. The nurse asked me if I was on any blood thinning medications. I didn't realise that low dose aspirin had such an effect.

Good-luck and I hope all goes well.

I was on IVF for many, many cycles with no luck until I started taking low dose aspirin (cartia as well). I fell pregnant on my second try with aspirin. I kept taking it until the beginning of my final trimester and delivered a perfect, healthy 9lb 4oz boy in May last year. In February this I started taking aspirin again and returned to IVF to have our final 2 frozen embryos transferred. I'm now 14 weeks pregnant and will take aspirin everyday until the beginning of my last trimester. I had no side effects, apart from the expected, meaning I bled a little bit longer after a blood test - and most importantly my baby was perfect. No complications during my elective CS (big baby) either. Good luck to you and rest easy.

thanks for your responses! I feel a bit more at ease with taking the asprin now.

I know I should trust my dr....but I get so worries sometimes. Like everyone I guess, I just want the very best for this pregnancy and the baby

I have found this thread very interesting as I had PIH in all four pregnancies and we are now hoping to start IVF in the next month or so.
I have never heard of taking asprin for this condition but would be interested to hear more about it.
Do you have to have it prescribed or can one just start taking it? and at what dosage?
I will be sure to ask the FS at my appointment on Monday.
Livgoesagain do you mind me asking the reason you are taking calcium supplements?

Hi, I lost my bub at 19 weeks 6 days. They think it may have been due to factor 5 as well. I didn't know before hand that I had this. It's hard to find anyonhe that has this, but aparently it's really common. But I am now on low dose asprin(astrix) and I feel ok. No side effects that I can tell. Although I am tossing up wether or not to do pg test. I've been feeling very pg latley:barf: but I'm a it scared.

Another factor 5 leiden mumma here:thumbsdown:

Lost our daughter at 26 weeks due to blood clots.

Pregnancy after that one I was on 1 asprin and a clexane injection daily during pregnancy and 8 weeks following delivery.

Once we fall pregnant again low dose asprin from the moment we get a :bfp:through the pregnancy.

Didn't have any side effects for me or bubs, just like the others, I bleed a little longer.

Hey, I took low dose aspirin, same brand as you throughout both my 2nd and 3rd pregnancies as I have anticardiolopin antibodies. There were no side effects at all, it's a very lose dose. Only concern is to try and stop taking it a certain amount of time before the birth to decrease your risk of pp bleeding as it's a blood thinner. Usually about 4 weeks prior, depends on dr. My ob couldn't care less as he was skilled at controlling blood loss and my dd was delivered at 36 weeks while I was still taking it. She was IUGR but this wasn't related to aspirin at all.
I wouldn't worry- I'm sure your dr has weighed up risks and I would rather be safe than sorry:)

I also have "Factor 5" and am on a daily injection of Clexane. I am currently 7.5 weeks and have just found a clot in the uterus near bub. I had a day of minor bleeding which prompted the US. I am taking clexane to thin the blood and I still get a clot. I am very worried because these subchorionic haemotoma's can be very scary, some causing m/c.

I wonder if I should also be taking aspirin in conjunction with Clexane (like you Chilli...) it obviously worked for you! You took clexane the entire pregnancy? Wow!

cyclesix congratulations on your well deserved :bfp:.

Might be worth just bouncing the asprin off your doctor. I recall my doctor saying that because I have delivered all of my bubs before 30 weeks due to clots in the placenta, anything we could due to get our babies to a viable gestation was worth a go.

I have never had a clot in the first 12 weeks, so please take care and let us know how you go:hugs:

Having read the research on aspirin and pre-eclampsia I've started taking 50mg a day, as I'm at high risk and my BP is a tad high and I'm a bit puffy. There have been lots of studies that demonstrate that it's safe and effective, if you stop taking it at 36 weeks.
Other research also suggests that eating dark chocolate reduces the risk of pre-eclampsia as does taking 1mg of folic a day. Both contribute to placental health.
5 serves of dark chocolate a week lowers your risk of pre-eclampsia by 40%. :D

SPC! You are a wealth of knowledge and thank you for giving us the go ahead to indulge! My placenta could do with all the help it can get!
Hope your PE stays under control for you:yes:

I had PE with DD#1 and was put on Asprin early in this pregnancy. My OB recommended I take calcium too but I have decided not to as im already on Elevit and I have a fairly calcium rich diet.

hi girls- question for all you taking or familiar with daily low dose aspirin. i am taking daily low dose aspirin and in about 3 weeks I need to have a bunch of bloodwork done (for the first time since starting the aspirin). do you know if there is a problem with getting your blood drawn if on this? should you stop taking it a few days, or more, before you know you'll be getting blood tests?
thanks!

Hi shoo22 - I'm still taking low dose aspirin everyday and I've had no problems with blood work. I just had my Glucose tolerance test (3 blood tests over 2 hours) and had no problems. Your blood may just flow a little bit faster than normal. Hope that helps :)

I just got put on low dose aspirin today at 14 weeks pregnant and its thanks to this thread!:) I am at high risk as I had PIH with DD1 and she developed IUGR from clots forming in the placenta and preventing blood and oxygen flow.

I had asked the GP 4 weeks ago about going on aspirin and she told me I didnt know what I was talking about and not to even think about taking it (it was my 1st visit with her and ill never be going back)

When i told my midwife and my dr at the antenatal clinic they said they were disgusted and put me straight on it and said It would have been even more effective if id started it when I first suggested! It was this thread that made me decide to go against her wishes and ask my midwife. If I had taken her word,I would never have asked and they may not have thought to suggest it!

Thanks ladies!!

Way to go Pennylane! Good on you for being so proactive.

Hope taking the Asprin leads you to a wonderfully healthy and happy pregnancy - minus the clots:yelclap:

Yep i took low dose aspirin the whole way through my last pg. I have factor 5 leiden which is a blood clotting disorder(i clot too much). They think it was the cause of death for my little girl. So i had to take it for my whole pg to prevent clots from happening again. The only side effect was bleeding heaps when i cut myself thats all i had.

The amount of women with Factor V losing their babies is terrifying to read :(

I have it too and I am 16 weeks pregnant. I've told the doctors and they haven't told me to do anything differently. This is my first pregnancy and I've never clotted before.

Perhaps I should take some asprin? I am seeing the doctors on Monday, will ask them then.
