View Full Version : Save The Names Thread
Has anyone ever thought of bringing back some names from the brink of extinction? :D
Whatever happened to Ethel, Mabel, Gertrude, Gladys, Doris, Betty, Jean, Shirley, Percival, Aubrey, Edgar, Lex, Bruce, Barry, Gary, June, Agatha, Abraham, Bertha, Bernard, Cecil, Daphne, Cedric, Dolores, Hester, Hector, Gilbert, Wilbur, Wilma, Myrtle,
Rupert, Hubert, Herbert, Eugene, Franklin, Bertrand, Clement, Edmund, Cyrus, Augusta, Clementine, Beatrice, Edith, Ernest, Gwendolyn, Loretta, Prudence, Martha, Pearl, Ursula, Priscilla, Wilhelmina... etc, etc???
Of course, some names are beyond saving because they remind us of someone (or something) else...
**** (for obvious reasons)
Ronald (because of a clown who sells hamburgers)
Osama (because of a terrorised madman)
Russell (because of a terrorised madman who says he's an actor)
Shapelle (because of a poor woman locked up in Bali)
Remington (because of a razor blade)
Ernie (because of a funny muppet)
Bert (also because of a funny muppet)
Elvis (because he's the king)
Anyone got any ideas on how we can save these endangered species? Perhaps these names should be given to our pets?

When I had Vallerie, there was a MW at the hospy who'd been there for a looong time and said she hadn't heard of a baby named Vallerie (or Valerie, or Vallery etc etc) for over 10 years.... and I've not seen another kid named Vallerie since.
IMO better to have an "classic/vintage" name than a "sounds like she should be on a soap opera" name.
I keep being told that Eva is an old lady name.
Doesn't help that I want to pair it with Ruby (my great grandma's name) does it? :p

oooh Eva and Ruby were on my girls list!! Eva May (my great grandmother) or Ruby May (my other great grandmother was Rubina, but that sounds a bit too much like Rybena LOL)
I really love Elsie too, I'm sure it must be short for something? Elsbeth perhaps?

And, when people told me "oh Vallerie, that's such an grown up name! 'Val' etc" I just said "well she will actually spend more of her life as a grown up...." Yes it's cute to call a cute widdle baby Shaniqua or Tyniella... but I'd like people to take my kid's seriously when they're adults!!

My sister in law is Wilma...i lov ethe name. In fact, if we have more than one girl (which is looking pretty unlikely lol) we are thinking of calling her Wilma.
Isn't one of Mathew Burkes kids called Edith?
I like the name Agnes for some reason. Wouldn't use it, but I do think its cute.

Another fan of old old names here!
I adore flower names... Daisy, Rose, Iris
Also love precious stone names... Ruby, Emerald, Pearl
Also Audrey is gorgeous!
And for boys I love oldies too. Especially biblical names... can't you tell? :D
Joseph, Jonah, Noah, Isaiah.....
Pearl is my nana's name (not related to Great Nana Ruby)
I was thinking that if I was to call nugget Eva Ruby, and she wished to follow a now made up tradition by name her daughter with the middle name of a great nana she could be Pearl.. hehe like another stone!
I also really love Leonie but chris says that's an old lady name.. also Lydia is a favourite.
I have to admit tho', I shuddered when my dad suggested we use Clarence for a boy. :o
I love love love old vintage names!!! :)
With a Thomas Samuel, and a Matilda Jayne (Cooper isnt an old one i know, but it was my mil maidens name......) i am doing my bit to revive them!
If i ever had another girl my name list includes Clementine ( love it!) Violet, and Scarlett, also love Audrey, Mabel, Lily, Ruby, Ava, Eve, Eva, Daisy, Poppy, Eliza, i could go on all day! :D

In my area there are a few old names.
There have been;
Ivy, Ruby, Henry, Evelyn, Tess, Jock.
I'd like to give our next baby one of these; Winifred (my grandmothers name), Alice, Elsie (my other grandmothers nickname) or Clayborn.

My son has an Audrey in his class at school and my DD went to kinder with a Daisy, Lily and an Ivy-not related to one another. My SIL was going to have Wilhemina as a girls name but she got an Oscar instead.:)

Hi everyone Well both of my kids have two middle names.
Charlotte Rose Esme - after my great gran &
Kyle Jacob Edward - after DH's grandfather
I think Esme & Edward are 'old-fashioned' but I absolutely love them & feel really proud of the kids names. But if we go on to have more children the next namesake is Peggy(DH's gran)?????????? Not sure about it but must keep the tradition going wouldn't be fair on the other two would it????:D

Amelia is a pretty old fashioned name (she's named after her great grandmother).
If she was a boy, she would've been Joseph (after her great-great grandfather):)
[QUOTE=Shazbutt]I love the name Aubrey for a boy! Wish i'd have thought of that! QUOTE]
I used to have a patient at work, an elderly man, who's name was Aubrey and he hated it! Poor man, prob had put up with it for about 80 years at that stage! I commented how it was uncommon and he told me he hated it and his mother should never have called him that cause it was a girl's name.
I like Adelaide and Ottilie.
I like Gertrude  I know, most people hate it but I think shorten it to Rudie and it's cute.
And, I also like Pearl, but I want to have a Pearla. Have to be next baby as this one's a Matilda, if she's a she of course.

Wasn't the boy from Indian in the Cupboard called Omry? It's a version of Henry.

WOAH! I have never known anyone who has liked this name... but I'm glad someone does! It's my grandfather's name but everyone calls him Aub.
My favourite aunt is Gertrude but she's known as Gert or Gerty.

DD#2's middle name is May - after my late nanna.
My DH wanted to name any sons we had Sterling.
We also liked the name Kingsley Lewis or Mathew Edward.
Are the names Eden and Fern old school?? I love both of those names for a girl but DF doesnt like them. We must have funky names for our children he says! (Personally I think Eden and Fern are pretty funky!!)

Curiously, what teasing would Fern get? I'm confused.

I like Dagmar for some weird reason ...
I love classic names - obviously with dd Anna. Also like Lily, Ruby & Cassia :)
My name is Jayne & I like it more & more as I grow older because it doesn't date me as much as most of the girl's names that were popular when I was young (Kylie, Danielle, Michelle etc etc I was a child of the late 70s)

Oh, I don't know... Kids can just be cruel AND imaginitive... Green Tree, Bush, Gully etc... I went to school with a girl called Fleur and Fern reminds me of Fleur.
Maybe it is just me - I'm not a fan of everyday words as names... eg, Mark that spot Mark!! and so forth with Nick, Gail, Sky, Bill etc...

Whatever happened to ... Loretta, Prudence, Martha, Pearl,... etc, etc???
Ahem??!! I'm here! And there are a few others around, I've met at least a half dozen in my life so far. I was named after my father's favorite great-aunt, truly old-fashioned, lol.
I quite like Lillian.

My DD's name is Coralie (pronouned Coral-lie), apparently its any old name pronounced Coral-lee.
Friends of ours have a son called Eden, so I guess its unisex!!
I think that old fashioned names will come back in as they date quite well and suit people as kids & adults but I don't think there will be many kids named Jane, Sara, Karen, Anne, Mary, or Peter, Paul, Mark, David, Bradley in my DD's class when she starts school in 2012.

You can tease any name.

Oooohhh... I love the name Juliet. We had that picked for a girl (along with Alyssa.) :fingerscrossed: Fingerscrossed for next time!!
all the chris' i know are/were monsters as kids!(so sorry for anyone with a chris)
Must say though, and you might agree Shezi, all the Chris' I know as adults are really nice people.
I'm tied to one, they're still monster!

I also really love Leonie but chris says that's an old lady name..
Hey!! Leonie is my middle name!! (It's also the name of my aunt who would be about 50 if she were still around but that's not the point!!)
:D
I knew a beautiful little girl called Leonie, so I don't associate it with old ladies. :)
I really wanted to call DS #2 Sadie if he was a girl but DH didn't like it so we were going to go with Ava - a lot of old fashioned names are making a come back but I guess a few are better not to!! eg. Hyacinth, Beverley and my dad's name Wayne I hope people try not to resurrect - JMO hope I'm not offending anyone!!
I also like Sadie - but DH doesn't, he says it reminds him of "Sadie the Cleaning Lady" song :p. If we have another girl we will be naming her Ashlee - an older name but updated spelling (cause my middle name is spelled Lee)
I like Thomas, Daniel and William for boys, all old fashioned, but have chosen Jayden Thomas if we have a boy. At this stage tough Shannyn is stil only tiny, so I would be crazy to think of having another one any time soon.....
Skyelee - up until recently Jayden Thomas was my favourite boy name :)
And Ashlee my favourite girl :D
for someone who's last job was in a nursing home, old fashioned names bring back too many memories for me of sick people:confused:
one thing i noticed is with ds while he got jake at the time of choosing names i was into all wierd names eg. dakota etc... (not weird just modern i guess) this time im more into names around my generation such as lisa, luke, kurt,etc..
