Has anyone been advised to try using makaton baby sign with their child? Early Intervention ahve suggested it and I was wondering whether others have benefited.
if you do a search for baby sign language .. you'll find there ahve been a few threads on it .. through my time here on bubhub ..
I used some basic sign language with my DS JAck .. and it definitely helped his language .. as a special ed teacher I cant say enough positive things about signing :) it helps kids learn on so many levels .. I"ve certainly seen it tranform some children at school ..
:hugs: good luck

Did you have to buy a handbook peta? I can't find anywhere to download the basics, and can't afford a handbook. And when I ask at EI they just show me the signs and I can't remember them an hour later.

Im not trying to dampen your efforts of signing with your children - im all for it- but during my study there was an article i read where it just said to be careful that children do not become RELIANT on makaton in later years- in case they need to learn the Auslan signing. Its different, apparantly (im not 100% sure the differences).
I also read that children will sometimes be more reluctant to use verbal skills if they are heavily reliant on makaton.
I say, im all for it especially if you keep these things in mind.
Please do not jump on me for this- its just something i read- and its not being negative of makaton, its just pointing out some issues that may occur.
Best wishes,
STM

I may be able to help you with information if you need to find out more about it? During my training, i have come into contact with trained professionals so i can pass info on if you like?

I havee read this too, but atm DS is almost two and doesn't say any words. He will just sit there and scream until I can work out what he wants. Early Intervention have suggested I try using makaton, as well as speaking when I do the sign. I don't even know if Ds will take to it, but at this point anything is worth a try.

I am just trying to find a chart of some basic signs really, like cup, food, more, and things like that.

:iagree: exactly!! Anything is better than screaming.
Our speechy (whos now left :() gave us a few hand outs of basics, i can photo copy them and send them to you if you like? Although its a bit hard to work out how to do them off paper anyway, and i cant do half of them!! I only know more, eat, drink and horse. lol the only easy ones :p i am trying!!! And im taking them to the special school next friday (our early intervention) and they're going to help me.
We dont have a speechy any more :crying: We'll have to wait god knows how long, then travell 200km each way for appointments, which she is desperatly in need of so it may even be once a week!! (although every second week we'd only need to drive 14k round trip instead of 400, but still!! stressfull!!)

Are you sure you don't mind? I'll pm you my address...
I know what you mean about the speechy. At EI there is an ot, and a speechy and cause we go there DS doesn't qualify to go to community health to see another speechy or even a physio. Even though he needs the physio. We have to find a private one and go to that instead!!! Plus our speechy is away for the next 2 months, but still can't see anyone else.
The way I see it, if a kid needs help, they should get help!!!

I used to teach Makaton and have a bunch of sheets up to level 8, if you would like them still I can scan them and email them to you.
I taught DD1 when she was about 8 mths and she would use it to let me know when she was hungy or thirsty. I can't rave about it enough.
