Hi there,

Can anyone help? I need to choose a Brisbane hospital (I am in Annerley) ASAP and have absolutely no idea where to start. Can anyone offer some words of wisdom?

I would really appreciate your views/ stories etc (positive or negative) on both the Mater Mothers Private Hospital or Royal Brisbane (Private) and/or OB's practicing there as I need to choose both a hospital and an OB as soon as possible.

Cheers,
Olivia.

Hi Olivia, I live close by and delivered at the Mater Private last year. It was easter and it was very busy. I wasn't happy with the midwives - my labour midwife was quite discouraging and I received different advice re:breastfeeding with every shift change. Very comfortable stay though. Anyway, I think the hospital you choose very much depends on the OB you have...I went to Dr Len Yared..however he didn't make it to the delivery and Dr Keeping came in. I found them both good OB's, but being my first time I didn't have an experience to compare it to. I don't know anything about RBWH private...didn't even know it had a private section, so you'll have to get a recommendation elswhere. Good luck with your pregnacy.

I can not honestly recommend a thing about the Mater Private at South Brisbane.

The conflicting advice from each midwife, the lack of care and a midwife that had a very limited use of the English language, are only the tip of the iceberg.

My DD was born by emergency Caesar at 34weeks and was placed into the Special Care Nursery. I was in the room furthest from the Nursery. I asked to be moved closer to rooms that were empty because I was always walking a long way to the nursery - they couldn't be bothered.

The morning after my daughter was born and I was still attached to the drip and catheter, I had to ring the SCN to find out how my daughter was and they laughed at me.

I don't have a good thing to say about the place and neither does another person who delivered their first there.

If you are keen for a Mater Hospital - try the one at Redlands it is excellent.

Thanks for the advice. It's really appreciated. If anyone has any other experiences I'd still love to hear about them. Might also consider going to the Wesley so if anyone has any sthing to say about the Wesley...

I too have heard good things of the Wesley and would probably go there when I have #2 before I'd go back to the Mater.

I went to the Mater and apart from having a personality clash with one or two of the upstairs midwives, everything else was great. Felt really well supported during labour and birth, and for the most part, during recovery.

I've always assumed I will go back there for No.2 but we'll wait and see what happens!

Hi

I delivered at the Mater Private 6 months ago. An agree with what has already be said by sopolicha.

Wehad a terrible time.

The delivery midwifes were good, especailly the one we had when we first arrive, but some of the ones on the ward where awful. I asked one to help me with my bags the day after having a c/s and was told by her that my Fing husband should have done it. I was left in the shower after buzzing several times, and when mum when to get someone to help she was told they were busy having morning tea!!!!!!!!

We did have a couple of good midwifes, they were the weekend ones.

There was constant conficlicting advice, and a lot of the time I was told to work it out myself. A bit difficult when it is your first time trying to BF!!!

Hope this has helped

Hi

I had my first DS at RBWH. I have to say my experience was pretty similar to that of sopolicha. I went public, most of the midwives were hopeless, there were only a couple of nice ones. My DS was in special care (born with cleft lip and palate) even though I was happy to have i=him in my room. I had to go down stairs everyday (after a c-section) to see him and demand feed him. Pretty cr@p all round and wouldn't recommend them.
