Its a good idea i read about this a while ago somewhere my only problem with it would be that if the kids ate vegie filled cakes etc all the time they wouldnt learn to eat normal food and would want cakes etc cookies all the time. We have only had to hide the vegies with one so far my grater is my best freind plus the fact they love tomato sauce is great as it hides them all LOL

I saw Jessica Seinfeld on Oprah promoting her book, and I truly do want it. It looks great, but it is rather pricey. My children do not eat their veges, so I am thinking that it maybe worth the investment, just gotta wait to have an extra $40 dollars to buy it!

:iagree::laughing:, though, if I saw some chocky cake with a chook's foot sticking out, i'd be a little hesitant, i must say! :D

:oI must admit, before i knew any better, as a child we used to eat pigs trotters. Then one day I noticed the tiny hairs on the skin, kinda put me off for life:barf:

LOL, oops, this thread was about veges!

my nannas neighbour cooked the chocolate cake and she said it was the best cake she has ever had apparently the beetroot in it makes it so nice and moist, i like the idea of the book and i am going to borrow it off a friend but i am unsure over the cauilflower pureed in the scrambled eggs.

I also understand how some of you are saying we shouldnt promote vegies in unhealthy food as it may make them obese but i am like alot of mothers who children refuse to eat food at the moment (blimmin 3yr olds) anyway i find the food he likes, eg meatballs really small 3yr old bite size and put pureed veg into that and my friend puts pureed veg into her tomato sauce so atleast they are getting 1 veg in it.

I saw on Oprah too, and I believe she also had homemade chicken nuggets incorporating purees too - so not all cakes and stuff.

I really want this book too!

I bought the book with a gift voucher from Borders last Xmas, and it's really good. I haven't cooked anything from it yet, but it does look great.

Luckily my DS likes vegies, he even pinched some of my steamed broccoli and zucchini from my plate last night as I ate dinner - after he'd had all his dinner earlier in the evening. Looks like he takes after me, I always liked vegies and still do.

Oh, and one thing with the Deceptively Delicious book is that she actually says you should put vegies on kids' plates still so that they know to eat real vegies too, you don't just hide it all the time. Otherwise they wouldn't realise that they need to eat vegies.

I actually dont agree with the idea of putting pureed fruits and veges into otherwise sweet treats.. I can see some parents using it the wrong way by going 'ohhh my god, they are eating it and it has spinach in it!! wow ill keep feeding it to them".
The downside to that would by far outweigh the good.
(I know not a lot of parents would do that - but it would happen)

If it was for a once in a while treat - then ok.

Getting veges into the kids isnt that hard (for most parents lol) - you can incorporate them into more foods than you think.

Like was mentioned about the chicken nuggets earlier - instead of dipping the chicken into milk/egg first - you dip it into pureed vege of your choice and then crumb.

Chicken parmis even - puree other veges into the tomato sauce to put on top.

Spag bol - I add all sorts of pureed veges to my sauce - so long as it looks like tomato - the kids couldnt care less.
(I think they would if they knew they were actually eating about 6 different veges haha)

Meatballs using mashed potato instead of flour to bind them together (no milk or butter in it - needs to be firm)

A lot of kids will even eat carrot and sweet potato 'chips'. Slice them up with some normal potato chips and oven bake then. Tell them they are 'different coloured' potatoes.

The cauliflower in the scrambled eggs is also really not bad - you cant really taste it and it gives it a really creamy texture.

Im keen to have a look at it - simply because I like interesting and different food.. but still not willing to pay the price for it.

:iagree: Giving a sweet treat is okay once in a while, but cramming your kid full of chocolate brownies because it has some mashed spinach in it just doesn't seem worth it.

Just be training your kid to enjoy LOTS of sweet food.

I do like the idea of grating vegetables into bolognese sauce and whatnot.. So its a healthy veggie meal, with some hidden veggies.

DH told DD that these are 'fairy potatoes'. She now thinks they're the greatest.

 She said that you still put vegies on the plate too but you don't have to fight them to eat it because you know they are getting some in their other food. It is stress free!

I have bought the book but I haven't tried it yet. Maybe next week.....

I gotta agree with that. I also think a lot of mums get obsessive about their kids eating vegies. My kids go through stages of not eating any vegies, or wanting them raw or just fruit, or only one veg; they come around again and it's better not to stress about it and make an issue about food. My parents used to sprinkle sugar on tomatoes and sometimes lettuce to try and get me to eat it. That is crazy (and no I don't still do it :p)

heh, I mash other vegies into mash potato (and I leave the skins on the potatoes), otherwise DS will only eat potato and beetroot.
