A memory for my daughter. It maybe alittle long

April 20th 08

Today is my last day of work before I take my maternity leave. Looking forward for tomorrow, get to sleep in.

Shift commencing at 8:45 at reception and counting the hours I have left for the day before I finish up to start preparing for my baby’s arrival.

For tomorrows agenda. (21st April) I plan to continue packing my bag for the hospital as I have only have packed the basics in there. Then at 1.45pm I am having a check up at the hospital to make sure the baby ispositioned correctly and to listen to the heart beat. Then I plan on taking Missy our new dog for her first walk, she is only 6 weeks old at the time, we got her last week.

Back to the 20th.

After lunch at 2pm I felt a cramp it was sharp but I ignored it as it didn’t hurt that much and a got another at around 4pm and this time went to the toilet and noticed that I had a show but thought nothing of it (I think I wanted to ignore it more, I wouldn’t be one of those mothers that work up till the last minute and you weren’t due till the 5th of May). I received flowers from the reception girls wishing me luck with the new baby and finished work at 5:15pm.

From work I went over to my parents. The first thing I did was went to the toilet again to see if it was true or if I was seeing things at work, and yes I seen a little again. I then asked my mum if this was normal. And she told me i am going to start labor soon, I just laughed it off then at around 6:30pm I got another quick sharp cramp which made me stand up really quickly. My mum then said to me “it is starting!” and I was like “Whatever” My mum then went running to get my husband and I ran after her saying your over reacting. She said "take her to the hospital she is going to have the baby!” I'm like ''I am fine it is just moving in a ouchy way, I am fine now!” Husband didnt beleive it either "she can’t be she still got at least 2 weeks to go!” and I was thinking at least he thinks nothing of it, it was just another movement. We then went home and for mum's peace of mind I called the hospital to make sure I was fine.

It was 7:30pm I called and told them the situation and they asked me if I have felt the baby move today and I said “I didn’t pay attention I was working” she also said it was normal to have a show it can happen 4 weeks before the baby is due, but you still have 2 weeks to go. Then she asked if I was in labour I’m like “I don’t know! This is my first child, I feel fine but these sudden sharp pains are hurting for about 30 seconds then I am fine” She then said call when the pains are 5 mins apart, it should be too soon.

We then had dinner and i went to bed at 9pm. Once I laid down I started to get the sharp pains more frequently every 20 minutes all of a sudden, they were stronger then the other ones. :banghead: I don’t remember if I was in pain from them or in shock that it was happening to me without a day off work!. I couldn’t image I finish my full time job to go straight into 2 full time jobs straight away!.

My husband then called the hospital at 9:45pm and again they told me to wait till it was 5 minutes apart. Then 30mins later they were 10 minutes apart. We called again and said it still a long time call when they are 5 minutes apart, make sure you time them. Another 10 minutes when by and I got out of bed and felt really sick and , ........ yucky. Again my husband called and said that he was taking me to the hospital. I then spoke to the midwife and she told me to come in and they will check me out to make sure that I am alright.

My husband then had to pack my bag, luckly he knew what to put in (follow the check list!)

We arrived at the hospital at 11pm where they put me on the monitor to monitor the baby’s heart rate and the contractions I was feeling. I was in pain but the pain was bearable. The contractions just kept on coming but felt fine. A midwife then came and checked the monitor at 11:30pm and said that I was at the begining of labor and kept me on the monitor.

At about 12:30 still on that machine a midwife came and told me my options of what I can have during the labor (gas, epidrillol, bath etc) then she checked to see how far dilated I was and seen that I was 4cm. She then said I could only have the choice of a bath or the gas, my husband said the bath he didn’t want me taking anything. I was thinking to myself I am the one in pain here not you!. The midwife then said she will make the bath as that helps the contractions so I agreed.

I then moved into the birthing room at 12:50am. This is when it hit me, I really am going to have this baby but when? All I kept on thinking was of my mum, my mum who was in labor with me for 48hrs i didn’t want to be in pain for that long especially if they meant to get worse!

It was a weird feeling as the baby cot was on the other side of the room that’s when i believed it to be true when I seen the cot with the pink, blue white hospital blanket in it. I am going to have this baby.

At 1am the midwife told me I had to have antibodies put into my blood for the delivery of the baby. She told me it will hurt to place the needle in and I had to keep still throught the contractions, now they were felling alittle stronger. She first placed it into my left hand and Hubby told me not to look at the needle and I am thinking to myself as if I am going to look at it!. He was looking at it and felt my pain as he almost fainted! What a help he would of been if he did! That wasn’t the worst thing the needle didn’t go in correctly and she had to put it into my other hand. Lucky it went in straight away it felt quicker then the first one. As it was a needle with a tube she injected 10mls of the antibodies in it and told me it had to be placed in every 6 hours! And I said out loud “WHAT! I am going to be in pain for more then 6 hours! She told me “You better have a quick labor then”.

Now my first really painful contraction came I just began to jump. The midwife then told me the bath was ready. I had another contraction started to jump then went running to the toilet. By the time I got there and sat on it my water had just broken. The midwife then asked me if I wanted to push and I was like YES! but I am going to the toilet. She told me I wasn’t I was going to have the baby! I had 2 midwifes put me to the bed. This was at 1:20am. They checked again to see how far I was dilated and said I was fully dilated and could see the head (too much information!)

Now this is where the real pain begins! (its more the opening not the contractions). It took a long 25mins for her to come out and when she did come out it was the weirdest feeling I cannot descried it, it felt like some pushed on my stomach and pushed her out and it felt so quick. She started to cry straight away, she was crying before the rest of her body had come out.:crying:

She was so tiny but could scream! :hissy: Even the midwifes said she was small. I always did say to hubby I wanted a little baby with a little head and a quick labor! I was lucky enough to get it all with an added bonus of it being a Girl.

When i look back at the labor lots of people said i would have a quick labor as they said if you walk heaps it will be quick (as some work shift i was walking around alot) so if your a soon to be mother do some walking as now i beleive it to be true. Walking does help the labor process.

The midwife said next time I have a baby and I get pain make sure I go to hospital straight away and I was like why? They say the next one is quicker!! Now that’s a scary thought, I was in denial about being in labor, if I have another one I might have it at home or worse at work!!!!

Overall what a shock, have a baby 8 ½ hrs after I began maternity leave (that’s leaving it to the last minute) and went to hospital at 11pm and have the baby at 1:45 not even 3 hours later I reckon that isn’t bad at all! The pain was a killer towards the end but in the end all worth while, look what I go in the end a health beautiful baby girl which we called Isabella .

Born 21st April 1:45am with a weight of 6.5 pounds (2880grms), 50cm long, with a small head of 32 cm (not that it would make a difference to the pain!)
