View Full Version : When is it safe for them to tummy sleep?
DS is 11 months. I always turn him onto his back when I find him asleep on his tummy.
But there must be a point when it is OK to leave them asleep on their front in terms of SIDS risk?
Does anyone know when that is?
TIA
I don't know when its actually classified as safe but my 10mth old rolls and crawls all around the cot and ends up in all types of positions these days. I used to move her back to the back sleeping position but she instantly rolls over so now i don't even try as it just seems to irritate her.

My DS was rolling on his front at 6 months and I didn't even bother trying to roll him. It just woke him and I had to spend ages getting him back to sleep for him to just roll on his belly again.
I always though it was when they could move onto their tummy themselves (not the accidental roll though IYKWIM. I never bothered moving DD - she would have growled at me

i was told it was only a sids risk when u placed them on the tummy..
if they roll over its considered ok coz they know there doing it?? if that makes sence.. thats what i was told anyway..
:laughing: poor DS he's probably wondering why I keep coming in and bothering him in the middle of his sleeps.
 that's funny! He's probably thinking "geez mum would you just leave me to sleep!"
I think he should be fine, just make sure there's no teddies or loose sheets or anything that could cover his face.
I always have / had a very tight fitting sheet, no toys, etc.

This is what I got told. If they can roll by themselves it is ok because if they get into any trouble they can roll themselves back again.
I was always advised that once they could roll around by themselves (ie. Roll to once position and then roll back easily) and once they started crawling, it was safer.
DS hated back sleeping from birth though and would only sleep on his tummy, you can imagine how highly strung I was

Once they are able to roll over by themselves they can sleep on their tummy....although my DS slept on his tummy since birth...i know all the SIDS stuff but even the midwives at the hospital couldnt get him to sleep at all any other way. i used to check on him like every 20 minutes (even when sleeping through the night) but ahve eventually gotten used to it. It he has decent head and neck control then he will be fine. By that age they can turn their head to breathe
