Waking up at 1am on the 20/04/08 to the most intense pain in my lower belly, I just knew this was it! How exciting, in 10 hours give or take we were going to be parents – ha ha ha. There I was happily laboring away timing my contractions at 8 mins apart thinking to myself this really isn’t too bad, I can manage this pain .
After 2 hours I decided to go and wake DH up and let him know that this was it as my contractions were getting more regular at 6 – 8 mins apart. DH got up and sat in the lounge watching a soccer match! We both decided we would try and go back to sleep for a bit after I took some panadol and warmed my heat pack up. I think that only lasted about 20 mins before I had to move. I labored at home all day Sunday with the contractions getting stronger and closer together. DH was fantastic rubbing my back, timing contractions and going and getting me frosty fruits when I asked :valentine:.
Finally at about 5pm I decided to try the shower as the heat pack just wasn’t cutting it anymore. Oh boy did the contractions increase in strength from there. I really wasn’t managing the pain at all and was beginning to get a bit down on myself as I wasn’t breathing through the pain. DH made the call the hospital when my contractions were 3 mins apart and I really was starting to not cope, that is when we decided to go to the hospital. On the way in between contractions, I said to DH, I think we are having a girl and he agreed. What a guess!
As soon as we got there I had an internal done and the middie told me I was only 2 to 3 cm dilated. After all that – WTF!!! :hair:
I asked for pain relief and was given a shot of pethadene which did absolutely nothing! I got up to move around to help with the contractions right after the shot and my waters gushed out then. I must have been making a bit of noise as they then moved me to the birthing suite where I stripped off as soon as we walked in the door and headed for the shower :D.
I guess by this point you can tell I wasn’t handling the pain very well ;) and the minute the middie walked in I demanded an epidural. I think I may have been a bit abrupt with her as she gave me a dirty look. I apologized to her after I had the epi though. So at 10 pm on Sunday night I was blissfully pain free for the first time in almost 24 hours! DH and I managed to snooze for a little while until a new middle came in at 1am and gave me an internal and let me know that I was almost fully dilated and that it was almost time to start pushing. At 2 am I had another internal, was pronounced fully dilated and started pushing with the next contraction.
After pushing for almost an hour and a half we weren’t really getting anywhere apart from seeing the top of Poppy’s head and I could tell the middie was starting to get a bit concerned. My contractions weren’t strong enough to push her out. The middie then started the syntocin (sp) drip to hopefully increase the strength of my contractions but unfortunately that didn’t work either.
A doctor came in at that point to examine me and let me know that I would either have to have a forceps delivery or a c sect. By this time it was almost 4 am and I was beyond exhausted. I just wanted to deliver my baby! I signed the papers and off we went to theatre. After 2 strong pushes Poppy June was delivered with the help of some forceps at 5.11am. She had swallowed some meconium due to the long labor and had to be suctioned out a bit but other than that she was perfectly healthy and scored 9 @ 1 min and 9 @ 5 mins on the apgar test. DH and I looked at each other and just cried. He kept saying I love you so much. The absolutely best feeling of my life! And to be able to finally hold our little girl, what a feeling!

All I can say to any first time mum to be is no matter how well planned out your birth plan is and how you want things to go, don’t be disappointed if you don’t get a chance to follow it. For me personally, I did not want an epi, only wanted pethadene as a last resort and wanted to have a nice active birth. Things don’t always go to plan and the most important thing is the safe delivery of our babies. If I had to do it all again, I wouldn’t change a thing! :cloud9:
