View Full Version : November/December 07 Bubs - Stats and Advice?
Hello Ladies!!!
Been a while since I have posted here that's for sure and I was hoping you might be able to help me. Either to put my mind at ease or point me in the right direction. I am just not entirely sure my DS2 is getting enough to eat so I thought I would put some stats on here to see what you think and maybe get an idea of how your bubs are growing and also just to get some advice!!
Birth Weight - 4.3kg
Current Weight (at 5 mths) - 6.77kg
Food Source - Exclusively Breastfed
He seems to be having enough wet and pooey nappies, is happy and alert and occasionally sleeps through the night. He feeds VERY fast and seems happy at the end of each feed, but I worry that he doesn't seem to be putting on a lot of weight.
I guess my issue is that DS1 was such a big baby - he was born nearly as big as DS2 but weighed about 1.5kg more at this age.
So - do I worry? Should I take him to doc? Or see a lactation consultant?
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Hi
I've just had a look at my babies health records and according to your sons stats he is in between the 9th and 25th percentile for weight. I don't think this in itself is cause for worry if he seems happy enough, alert and not unhappy after a feed. However if it was me I would take him to the Dr's just to run it by them.

Thanks for that Moops - it just feels so odd and new I guess this time around as DS1 was waaayyy up the other end of the charts so I am not used this. I think I will take him to the doc - if for no other reason then for my piece of mind.

I am not a doctor so cannot comment on whether Patrick's current weight is healthy for him or not..but gaging from your post I would think he is going great guns IMHO.
In another four weeks he will be starting solids. Is he a very hungry bub now?
Certainly get him checked if you are worried..but also remember that although they come from the same gene pool, kids in the same family can differ widely in all aspects including weight gain and body shape.
Good luck. My hat's off to you for managing to breastfeed full time hon. That is awesome!
Amy:)
My baby is 2wks older and is 6.8kgs and I havent any concerns with his weight at all. Hes very happy and healthy and still breastfed.
My DD is 6.8kg and is one week older. She is exclusively bf and our GP weighed her 2 weeks ago when she was 6.7kg and said she is going really well.
Was your first bub exclusively bf? BF babies do tend to be leaner.
Thanks so much ladies - you have actually put my mind much more at ease! My concern was from both the comparison to DS1 (he was exclusively BF until about 5 mths and then he started solids and a comp feed at night), and the fact that he was born so big. But as you said Amy, I really shouldn't compare them as every kid is different - a testament of this is that DS1 is olive skinned, dark haired, brown eyes and DS2 has pale skin, bright red hair and hazel eyes! (And thnks for the encouragement on the BF - I think I actually really needed that as I was beginning to feel like I might be somehow failing my son if that makes sense - I guess hormones are still kicking my emotions around!!)
Thanks Kaybee and Tally - knowing that bubs so close to his age weigh around the same is actually VERY reassuring!
he he. I meant to come back and add some more last night but I didnt get around to it.
My now 3yr old was the total opposite too at this stage he was about 8.2kg so I'm noticing a huge difference also.. Its nice not having to lug around the extra weight :D
I also have a friend whose little boy was born at the begining of Nov and he is only weighing 5.2kg atm.. he is tiny and they arent concerned about him, hes happy and healthy, almost mobile etc and very bright. Hes just so cute lol.

I think the percentile growth charts can be a bit misleading and can worry us mums unnecessarily! If he seems content, healthy and happy, as the others said, it's probably nothing too much to worry about. It's probably OK seeing he was fairly big born - it would likely be more of a worry if he was born a kilo or 2 lighter. He will probably catch up later when he starts solids. My DS was born on 15th Nov at 4.2 kg and is BF and now around 8 kg (but I did start solids at 4 months though because he was a hungry bub!).
I was told by my CHN that the main thing to look at with regard to the percentile charts is if the weight and height are in proportion to one another. For example, if his weight is in the 25th but his height is in the 75th, then he could be a bit too lean, or if his weight is in the 75th and his height is in the 25th then he could be too fat (for want of a better word!). If both the percentiles are closer together then that's a better thing.
I agree with the point that if you are concerned about bub's weight, definitely see your CHN or GP about it.
