View Full Version : White noise... is it really dangerous?
Ok, I read in a thread below that a study has been done which shows that exposure to constant white noise, could delay a babies speech and hearing. I didn't think much more of it, but as I sit here now, with my DD fast asleep with the white noise on, I'm wondering whether it could really be dangerous!
Has anyone else heard this? Does anyone else use white noise?
I have been using static on the radio since my DD was a newborn. (It's not particularly loud, I can't hear it when the door is closed) But we found it was the only way to settle her when she was very young. And now 11 months on, we still use it.
I would hate to think it could be delaying her development!
I assumed that the baby is exposed to 'white noise' in the womb for 9 months, therefore it was ok...
Hmmm, just a bit confused and concerned :(
Hmm well I've been using white noise on DD since she was a tiny baby, we have a little fan on low or the radio on. She has no problems with speech and hearing, actually she is a little chatterbox and started talking quite early for her age. She's 2 now.
It says it "could" so it's up to you. Maybe do more research and keep an eye out on your DD for any signs of delays :)

:iagree: All studies have some results that go in either direction.
And you have to ask yourself, if your daughter only sleeps with the white noise in the background, what would be the effect of sleep deprivation on her development?
If you're worried ask your CHN or GP, but I wouldn't let it worry you if she's meeting all her milestones.
Thanks for your comments. She is reaching all her milestones, and babbles away to herself and to us all the time, so I don't think her speech is looking as though it is delayed..
Guess I shouldn't worry about it. I'm thinking of trying to wean her off the white noise, and last night I turned it right down. I think i'll keep doing this every sleep time.

at work one day someone asked what white noise was. The first guy was long term military and his answer - it's what you use as a torture technique when you are trying to break someone.
all the mums just looked at him and then we gave our version of what it was. I don't understand how we use to make our babies happy and the military uses it as torture.

maybe if it was a really annoying buzz like a light bulb with something in it. i've heard things like that can drive someone insane if exposed all the time with no respite

The military also use sleep deprivation as torture and our babies have no problem with not sleeping...
I guess babies have different behaviour patterns to the criminals the army deal with!

I have heard that white noise causes anxiety.. even if we don't realise it.. Like the buzzing of the fridge etc.. I think Dr Oz said that. Haha.
