Is there a point in me going the docs? Just after Lucy got better from her vomitting and the poos last week shes now got whooping cough, at least im pretty sure she has. Its like a bark but when she breaths in to get a breath it sounds like a whoop....
Iv given her some normal dry cough medicine but it doesnt seem to be helping....has anyone elses kid had whooping cough?

She would need a swab taken to see if it was whooping cough, and yes she would need to see a doctor.

Do you immunise? If so, she should have been immunised against it by now (pertussiss (sp??))

If she does have it, it can be very serious so you should see a doctor as soon as possible.

It could be something else like asthma or croup which she would also need to see a doctor for. I hope she gets better soon, coughing babies are tough.

Whooping cough is a reportable disease, so yes, go get her swabbed and isolate her until she is better.

Yes most definitely take her to the docs..... especially seeing as you have a younger one....

Whooping cough can be very dangerous and will need treatment..... trust me, I've had it as a young kid and it was not fun!

they can do a blood test for whooping cough (the swab is horrid and isn't very accurate unless it is early on).

you need antibiotics for whooping cough and you are contagious until you have been taking them for about a week.

Please let's not turn this thread into a debate on immunisation efficacy. I really don't think it is the appropriate place for it.

Im not, but ur acting like her daughter couldnt possibly have it if she was vaccinated, which is misleading & may have caused the OP 2 disregard advice about seeing a doctor simply because her daughter was vaccinated.

I said the OP should seek medical advice because it could be one of a range of things all of which were serious.

I took her the hospital last night at midnight in the morning and waited for hours to see someone.....in the end Lucy fell asleep and we came home without seeing anyone...
The woman on reception told us to wind the windows down in the car and let her breathe in the cold iar so we did that....
Last night was a rough night, she was up till 4am coughing.....but then this morning she hasnt coughed once!:confused: I swear hubby took one listen to her when he got in and said we have to take her the hospital immediatly, thats how bad she sounded...i cant even describe the sound except it was just like whooping....

But this morning, nothing!

She's having the day off kindy just to be sure but yeah, how wierd!

When did she start coughing during the day?? :detective: Its pretty common with conditions like Bronchitis, asthma and even a few chest infections for them to clear during the day and only return when the cold air sets in. I find my son (who is asthmatic) starts coughing about 3am but is fine again by morning and starts again around 5pm when the cold air starts to kick in. Might be worth considering when you get to see the GP

Do you have a humidifier? I can really recommend these for a cough. Recently we had one going in both DS's room and our room and it really helped with our coughs.

Please still see a doc though.:)

I am no Doctor, but I can't help but wonder if it may be croup type illness? What you have described sounds very similar to DD's symptoms when she developed croup when she was 2 years old.

Anyway I hope you get to the bottom of it soon, its so hard hearing your littlie so sick with all the coughing.

Even though she has stopped coughing today please still take her to your GP for a thorough check-over.

All the best.

please keep taking her back when she coughs and demand to see someone straight away at the hospital, my dd2 who is now 20 months had whooping cough so bad last year that she ended up getting a worse infection and stoppped breathing and i had to resus her and call an ambulance, by this time i was p###ed off with the local hospital and saw the head pead there and he couldnt beleive that it was left untreated for so long she has now got a small amount of lung damage and as a result we have already been sick this year with croup and she is going to have trouble this winter he says as she is still rubbly even through summer. Saying this i used to rock up at the hops at 12-5am and the car ride did her good as the cold got into her airways but ask them to keep checking it is better to be safe then sorry dd2 had to go onto a high dose antibiotic for it to clear, and if you dont get it early on then th tests wont show up as whooping cough and also my kids are immunised and she still got it.

I had whooping cough and was given some antibiotics for it and was told to stay away from people for about 5 days. I had 1 bad day of coughing and then it was more like a cold with occasional coughing fits... but no whoop sound. even if its mild it is better to treat it as it can cause issues with lungs later on as Tomac has said (tomac that sounds terrible what an awful thing to go through).

BTW I did not test positive for it the first time I was tested, but had all the symptoms and was given the tablets anyway. I had another test and it came back positive. Hope it all goes well.

If the cold air helped, it sounds like it could be croup.

My dd gets it every year (she is 7 now) and while a lot of children get relief with the use of a humidifier/hot steamy environment, my dd will only stop coughing (and it does sound "whoopy" when she breathes in) if I wrap her in a warm blanket and sit outside in the cold air with her. When she was little we went on many long late night walks with her rugged up warm in her pram.

We have been the steroid and nebuliser route, but have found that the cold air works best - we only resort to steroids now if we are unable to alleviate it ourselves.
