Hi there,

my name is Suzanne. I am new here in point cook Victoria and have recently discovered 'we' are pregnant again :-) Can anyone please help me with what the potential costs are for someone who has no private medical cover?

We are here through my husbands job so have an Business 457 visa at the moment and our private medical care has a 12mth waiting period before we can use it to help cover the costs... bad timing or what ! lol

So is it going to be cheaper for us to apply for permanent residency straight away or go ahead and pay the costs?

Can anyone help advise us??

many thanks from a confused pregnant english bird!

BTW I have a lovely daughter called Sophie who is nearly 15 mths old xxx

Looking forward to hearing from anyone who can help :-)

I was reading something about this a few weeks ago in one of my magazines... cant remember which one for the life of me.. BUT what I do remember is that you should be covered by the UK health system. I cant remember the exact details, but something along the lines of there being an agreement between the UK and Australia meaning that you can be treated in a public hospital here and be covered. I am not too sure about all the different visa types but I think you can get a temporary medicare card while on a business visa. The temporary medicare card will allow you to use the public system which is just about free.
If you want to go Private then that is a different story. There is always a 1 year waiting period. When did you start the cover and when are you due? You dont have to have the private cover for a year before you get PG. You just need to have started the private cover a year before the baby's EDD. (If baby is premmie, you would still be covered)
If you wanted to use the private system covering the costs yourself, I think you would be looking at upwards of 5K and thats not including the obby.

Hope I have been of some help. Sorry I dont have the exact answers. Hopefully someone else here will be able to help a bit better!

Congratulations BTW and good luck sorting out the medical side of things. I am sure you will be fine :)

Hi, would you mind letting me know what the outcome of your pregnancy related expenditure was whilst you were on the 457 as I am currently on a 457 and looking into private health cover but want to start trying for first baby asap but not sure about what we are entitled to - someone has told us that if we get private cover, that will cover the birth and medicare will cover the rest prior to this but we were also led to belive that on a 457 we are not entitled to the reciprocal medicare! So confusing! Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated! Hope bub is doing well! xxx
