Just thought I would share this article from the RAA here in SA (same as RACV etc interstate) re the new Car Seat Legislation to be introduced later this year or early next.
And as it says in the article - even better if we parents and caregivers comply with them now!
click (http://www.raa.net/page.asp?TerID=918)
the part that I'm excited about is this
"The Australian Standards are currently developing a standard for larger booster seats suitable for children up to 36kg. This will allow parents to keep children in boosters for longer and it will be particularly useful for children under the age of seven who have outgrown their booster, which currently only takes up to 26kg in weight."
This means that we may soon be able to purchase a seat such as the Britax Regent which is currently on the market in the US but not available here. :smiliedance:

I read that one in the paper a month or so ago.
thank you for that useful advice! Great news on the booster seats too!

:smiliedance: Although my daughter, if she's like me, will only be 36kgs at the age of 16

I have two britax regents and they take up tp 36kgs but only to the height of 134cms or less ,so no 16 yr old should fit in them unless they were really small framed.
ill be glad when these seats are available in Australia as soo many people ask about my seat and where i got them..when i say the USA they ask about postage and then when i say how much it was they totally turn off as it is expensive but the seat + postage is close to the price of a maxi rider II here..and they will last sooo much longer.

I was told you can't use any car seat's from Oversea's????? Because they don't meet Australian Standards. So is that not ture?

There is probably nothing stopping you from using one on a child over the age of 1, as our current legislation has not rulings on seats for kids over one.
If you used a non-australian baby seat, you are probably doing so with the belief that it is safer than an aussie one (i am NOT saying this is true or untrue, as i haven't looked into it), and TBH i have never seen a cop check for the australian std logo on our kids seats when pulled over for RBT's. So even though they may not specifically comply, there is probably noting actually stopping it from happening.
that is great news about the larger seats. my ds is a big boy and has already grown out of 2 seats. i like the new laws, i just hope the police get strict about enforcing it
*sigh*
I wonder if this means they'll actually start making cars big enough to fit 3 across the back seat...
Or are they buying us all new cars after the 2nd child.
And if we are all buying bigger cars after the 2nd child, will petrol prices go down?.. will they make carspaces bigger in supermarkets?, will they modify the parking rules so that you have to park further from corners?
*sigh* a lot more money than just a car seat.
(and I'm not saying it's not a good idea.... just throwing in another point)

No, don't you know that is why they are talking about scrapping the baby bonus now - to stop us from having the third child and needing a bigger car. :p
Now seriously, we are in the same boat too, new car must come before new baby, as 3 seats just don't fit across the back of our medium sized car.
Can anyone tell me how the Britax ones differ from the Maxi-riders? They obviously take a larger child, so are a larger seat, but are they comparable safety wise for younger toddlers?

Now that's thinking like a politician! :laughing::laughing:
And I sooo understand about the car..
We've managed to fit 3 across the back of ours, but the boys are only on those little 'half-seat' boosters ...
It was the only way we could reach the seat belt clips.
I'm looking forward to getting a bigger car for bub 4, so that I CAN put the boys in safer seats.... at least for now they're so wedged in they can't go anywhere

for mum's with small cars
a great alternative to the Maxi Rider (in Booster mode) is the Infa Vario Kid - it's around 10cm narrower and $200 cheaper!
I would hope that the new legislation will encourage a lot of new seats onto the market as there should be increased demand :fingerscrossed:
