Can anyone advise me what else to serve instead of mash or rice?? The kilos are packing on!

I would be grateful for any recipe ideas! :chef:

PS . Sorry if I have put this question in the wrong section. :goodvibes:

Sweet potato has better carbs than normal potato...it is lower GI. You could use mashed sweet potato.

Also, if you use white rice, switch to brown, much better for you and lower GI and higher in fibre.

Try cous cous or polenta for a change as well.

Just dont have mashed potato at all? You could make it without butter and milk if you still want to have it sometimes.

Couscous? WeightWatchers always say to use it so it must be good.

Or brown rice would be good for your insides too. :D

If you don't want to use brown rice a happy medium is basmatti rice. It's a white rice but it's the lowest GI of the white rices. And it's yummy!

What about mashing some cannelini (sp) or butter beans? Mash heated beans with a little olive oil, salt, pepper and even some lemon juice/zest if you feel like it.

Polenta is a great idea from Ffrenchstar. If you make it with a nice strong beef stock (or vegetable if you are vegetarian) it takes on a really yummy flavour. You don't need to make it with cream and parmesan (which is heavenly but fattening!)

How about "mashed notatoes". Steam cauliflower, mash it up and add some light philedelphia cheese, salt and pepper- if you have a magic bullet type thing put it in that to make it extra smooth and creamy- its really yummy. I found this in a diet type recipe book!!

Salad or a pasta or rice salad.

Or a heap of stir-fried veggies done in soy and oyster sauce.

I have become a huge barley fan.
We already eat brown rice but we do half and half now. Half barley and half brown rice. Serve with your casseroles ect.

As someone has suggested - LOVE sweet potato mash - also little potatoes with skin on, steamed in the microwave and top with yogurt.

I find a small microwaved potato and a teaspoon of light sour cream just as satisfying as mash and far less fattening.

But then I love mash and make it really rich and buttery so it's really not good for anyone and I then proceed to eat heaps!

I'd just avoid carby/starchy sides then.

What about asparagus with a sauce (hollandaise/garlic/etc)?

Vermicelli noodles with cashews, chilli, various salad veges, and lightly dressed with lime juice?

Ratatouille would make a good side too. Yum.

A Bean Salad or home-made corn salsa or something would go okay with some dishes.

Various salads actually. Obviously. lol.

Or just put heaps of veg in there, so there's no real need for sides...? Like a paella or pilaf or casserole or pasta bake or something. Then, if you REALLY need a side, just make a basic green salad.
