Ryder's Birth Story

Ryder was due on the 7th April 2008.

This date came and went just like every other day of the pregnancy did.

During the night on Thursday 10th April 2008, I started getting regular pains which stopped me from sleeping any more then half an hour at a time.

All day Friday 12th April I felt funny. The pains were still there but as my waters hadn't broken and as I hadn't had the "much talked about" show, I still didn't think anything of them. The pains felt like pretty decent period cramps but I just kept putting them down to Braxten Hicks (which I had been suffering from pretty regularly throughout my pregnancy).

DP and I decided to hit the sack at 12:00 midnight Friday night. At 12:10am I lost a few drops of liquid, and thinking it was urine (I hadn't recently had bad bladder control but I just thought being overdue and all it was bound to happen).

I got up went to the toilet and went back to bed. By the time I got back to bed my undies were soaked through.

I was still sure that I had just peed myself (tmi) and being embarrassed as hell, got a new pair of undies out of the drawer and went out the lounge room to change.

I just made it off the carpet and onto the lino before the waters started gushing out. I was still confused as I still hadn't had a "show" and it wasn't until I noticed that it didn't smell like urine but semen (tmi) that I realised my waters had actually broken.

First thing I did was call my mum just to let her know.
My second phone call was to the hospital informing then that my waters had broken.
The midwife told me that as it was my first baby, I was overdue and that my waters had broken, the best action was to come straight to the hospital.

I woke DP up, got ready and heading to the hospital still experiencing only mild cramping.

We live approximately 5 minutes away from the hospital, by the time we arrived the cramping had gotten intense. I was still not timing anything but my estimation was that I was already down to 5 minutes or so.

Once we arrived we were shown to my room and I was hooked up to the CTG machine to moniter bub's heart beat and to see how far apart the contractions were.

To the surprise of everyone in the room I was already down to 3 minutes. By this stage it was 12:30am early Saturday morning - April 12th.

I laboured away until 6:00am in the morning where I was informed that my Doctor was in Papua New Ginea, the back up Doctor was out socialising in Melbourne somewhere and so a Doctor I had never met before in my life was going to be taking over.
(This actually turned out to be an extremely lucky thing to have happened.)

At 8:00am the Doctor finally arrived. By now I hadn't slept in nearly 24 hours, had been in full labour for 8 (approx) hours and I was exhausted.
The internal showed that I was 6 cms dilated and the Doctor estimated that the way I was going, I should have my little baby in my arms by early afternoon. By this stage the contractions were down to 1 and half minutes.

It was at this stage I opted to have the gas to try and help. The gas did absolutely nothing except help me concentrate on something else during the contraction. It also made me throw - up a couple of times (which isn't pleasant during a contraction!)

9, 10, 11 , 12 came and went. The Doctor reappeared at 1:00 and another internal confirmed that although the contractions were getting closer together, I was still only 6cm dilated. It was at this stage that the CTG machine was permanetly attached to my stomach and a drip of Syntocin was inserted into my arm to speed things along.

At 3:00pm my mum arrived to see how things were going. She informed me that me sister had arrived from Melbourne. I told mum it was ok to bring my sisters to visit.
I was in agony, I was exhausted and I needed a distraction.

(My sisters are 17 and 15. They were in that room for an hour after which they told mum they were only every going to adopt. It was all the contraception they needed!!)

At 4:30pm the Doctor reappeared. An internal showed that I was 8cm dilated (finally I had gotten somewhere). The contractions were now one on top of each other, (how they get just before you're ready to push the baby out).

I had no time to recover during contractions and was really starting to struggle. I was confined to pacing the length of my bed due to the drip and the monitering machine, and I was not happy.

I finally asked for more pain relief and after receiving the pethadine, managed to get an hours sleep.

At 7:00pm the Doctor came back and after another internal I was still only 8 cm dilated.

By this stage the Pethadine had started to where off and the contractions were back on top of each other.
It got so bad that I could no longer speak a full sentence before I was hit with another contraction.

The Doctor informed me that he would wait until 10:30 where as seeing as to how much I had advanced we would have to discuss a c- section as it was coming up to 24 hours since me waters broke and bub's heartbeat was starting to drop a little.

I was given an epidural at this stage as I was in absolute agony.

Finally 10:30 arrived. Once again I was only 8cm dilated, Bub's was showing distress and so the Doctor made a decision for a C- Section.

I was wheeled into theatre at 11:30 (I think, time gets blured from here) and at 12:01am, 13th April Ryder Blake Holland was born.

It turned out that Ryder had turned when the waters broke and had started trying to come out face first. His head had been ramming into my pelvis for 5 hours and had gotten stuck in the birth canal which had resulted in the drop of heartbeat. (This also explained why we had not progressed any further).

(It turns out that the Doctor who ended up looking after me is one of two Doctors in my town that perform C-Sections. My original Doctor would have sent me to the next town over and the back up Doctor has a record of not performing C-Sections at all).

He had to be forceably removed from the birth canal during the C- Section. He was born with a massive cone head (poor fella).

I didn't get to hold Ryder or feed Ryder until about 8:00am Sunday Morning, due to me suffering major blood loss, but they did rest him on my shoulder where he stopped crying straight away and just stared at me. It was the most amazing moment of my whole entire life.

He was then passed to daddy and I will never forget DP catching my eye and the look of complete amazement, love and appreciation on his face.

Ryder was then taken away to be weighed where it was found he was one big boy coming in at 9 pound 3, and 50cm long.

He was taken back to my room where my mum was waiting. DP stayed with me just long enough to make sure I was alright and then went and joined them in my room.

It turned out that my hemoglobin was extremely low. (Most people are between 11 and 15) I got down to 5.

To this day I am still on iron supplements and I still look white as a ghost.

Two days later on Tuesday 15th April I discharged myself from Hospital and went home.

It has been an amazing experience so far. I had wanted to give birth naturally so bad but as it turns out, we both may not have it out alive if I had not have trusted my doctor and given in to the C-Section.

DP was fantastic throughout the whole labour and birth. He was the wall of support I needed and has just recently came clean about how surprised he was that I did not abuse, swear or try to physically hurt him once throughout the whole experience.

I have a beautiful, healthy son and although I had a horrible time, it was so worth it in the end.
