Hi

My son is nearly 6 months and I have had him on solids for 4 weeks now. I am lost to know how many feeds of solids he should be having. Here is his typical day.

6.00am - Breastfeed

9.00am - Bottle(180ml) and pear and rice ceral (or some sort of fruit) usually three ice cubes of pear

12.00 - Bottle (180ml)

3.00pm - Bottle (180ml) and three cubes of pumkins and one of zucchini.

6.00pm - Bottle (180ml)

I have also tried heinz custards with him and he loves them. Any suggestions if I should give him more solid feeds and when?
:)

I was told to start them on 3 feeds when they are having a decent amount at feeds (about 1/4 cup). For my son this was 1 week after he started solids. He is now 7 mths and eats 3 meals, morning and afternoon tea and 4 bottles a day. Each baby is different so look for the signs that they are hunngry and you can't go wrong.

Once they are established on solids I have read that they should be having 3 solid meals a day. Basically Breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as b/f's - bottles. This is what my 7 month old has and it seems to be enough. I think as they get older and if they want it you can also offer morning and arvo tea.

So long as breast/bottle feeds are given before solids until 9 months, and you are just being 'baby-led' with amounts of solids I don't think you can go wrong!

Just a note though - custards, yoghurts etc should be held off until 9 months, and then given only in small amounts ... so says the National Health & Medical Research Council of Australia!
