I dont know what else 2 call them:laughing: I bought some self raising flour, got it home, straight into freezer, used it 2 days later, & there was a freaking little worm in my scones:thumbsdown::barf:so I threw them out & the flour. I thought freezing it was meant 2 stop this happening? I want 2 make my own bread eventually but how do I know the flour/breadmix wont have more worms:confused: I felt sooo sick & still kinda do just thinking about it:barf:

Freezing it won't help if the little beggars are already in it.

They are the larvae from Pantry Moths.

A lot of people are having problems with them at present.

I've never heard of freezing flour either!!??? Mine just gets chucked into a container in the pantry.

...runs off to re-evaluate flour-storing habits.

Ew! That sounds really yuck.

So if the flour had worms in it to start with does that mean the bread at the supermarket does too?:barf:

yup if you freeze if BEFORE the ickies 'hatch' you dont seem to get them .. my flour LIVES in the freezer now (I got the idea from another hubber) .. just keep the containers on the door of your freezer .. if the ickies have eggs in there (which are scarily common ) they dont hatch .. ick ick ick

if you contact the brand of the flour .. and describe the time line and WHERE you bought it from .. they will probably check other bags from that store .. you need to whinge (and years ago .. when my mum rang and whinged to uncle tobys.. they send her a hamper  .. so be polite .. but clearly annoyed and who knows??? you might at LEAST get free flour!!)

It's recommended that you freeze all flours to prevent weevils larvae etc. If you don't freeze your flour, put some Bay Leaves in the flour. It absolutely prevents/repels any weevils and in turn moths etc.

Aren't they called Weevils?

We had a huge problem with them about 6mnths ago. They were in a bag of bread crumbs DF bought and got all through my entire pantry. All that kinda stuff lives in my freezer now too. Also putting Bay Leaves in the pantry etc helps to prevent them.

I just went to a Tupperware party and the demonstrator said that when she buys flour, she gives the sides of packet a sharp tap / squeeze and if a puff of flour comes out then she doesn't buy it as it means something as let air in. I don't know how well this works.

Wow, I had no idea about flour in the freezer or bay leaves...

And I pride myself on wearing an apron in the kitchen!!! I am going to bay leaf my flour now, and then pop it in the freezer... Doesn't some of the freezer water get into it then though?
