Canada is banning polycarbonate bottles with bisphenol A (BPA) in them due to health concerns for babies.

Does anybody know if there are brands available in Australia that don't contain this?

At the moment I'm using Tommee Tippee Breast to Bottle. I'm not sure if these contain the dangerous substance or not.

Apparently you're not supposed to put boiling water in them and I"ve been doing it all along.

I think the only brand here that is truely safe, is glass bottles. Or you could use an avent magic cup with the avent teats (I would do this but my dd wont drink from any avent or tommee tippee wide neck anymore, only cheap regular neck bottles :hair:)

You can check ebay, there is a brand of bottle thats becoming very popular called Green to Grow, available in wide neck and regular I think.

Actually yes there is a brand available in Australia - Medela. they are readily available in chemists and on ebay and are clearly marked BPA free. They cost between $10 and $11 each. They are standard neck so I just use the standard neck size teats of the bottles my DS is used to.

PS I think the Tommee Tippee bottles do contain BPAs

you cant really avoid using the boiling water - either to prepare the drink .. or to sterilise the bottle itself .. sigh

you cant win .. EVERYTHING will kill you .. the world is full of dodgy stuff ..

the idea of a baby/ toddler with a GLASS bottle HORRIFIES me ..

besides the fact that you need a safe bottle - it would have to be one that fitted the right teat .. if you were hoping to move between breast and bottle ..

Call their help/customer service line and ask. After a big news story like this, they will, or should, have the answer on hand.

They are a bit of a hassle TBH because they are smaller, but well worth it. Do you have a Chemmart near you? That's where I got our from.

For everyone's info - the Medela range is BPA free, including their expressing funnels, tubes and storage.

Here is a link that includes a list of all US bottle brands. Many of these are available here, some of the BPA free ones you can order online. The list just doesn't include some brands that you can get here.

You have to click on each brand to see exactly what in their range is BPA free.

I have seen glass bottles in my local chemist in the Nuk range.

A little OT but what about Tupperware?

Ok, if I had to use bottles they would be glass bottles and the baby would be held to feed, and from 6 months the feeds would alternate between cup and bottle, then off a bottle by 12 months and the baby would only be held to be fed a bottle, and not be allowed to self-feed except via a cup. That was my back-up plan in the case that breastfeeding didn't work out. I don't like plastics much at all at the best of times.

(Yes I might seem to push breastfeeding but am open to other types of feeding and even had it as a back up plan for my own baby)

I contacted Tommee Tippee a month or so ago to ask about BPAs in their bottles and sippy cups etc - and they refused to tell me the exact type of plastic they used - they said it was a trade secret and all they would say is that I should 'rest assured' that they didn't use anything harmful in their products.

So I told them that didn't reassure me at all and that I wasn't exactly going to be selling their secrets to their competitors, I just had a right to know as a parent what type of plastic was in the products I was using.

Needless to say I have binned all my Tommee Tippee stuff and won't be buying again...

Avent Magic Cups are BPA free and you can use the wideneck Avent and Pigeon silicone teats on them

I use NUK glass bottles, FYI the childrens hospitals here in brissy also use glass bottles. They are very hard to break.

Just waiting on an email reply regarding shipping 2 aus, but Bornfree in the US sell 100% BPA free plastic & glass products, they do bulk packs & have the 260ml bottles. Medela only do 150mls though there are some places in aus that sell them. :)

Thanks everyone. You have saved the day as usual! :yelclap:

I searched the stores for hours today looking for something labelled as being BPA-free. I couldn't find anything so I gave up but thanks to you, I now know which brands to look for.

We actually have an avent magic cup already - I bought that brand specially because it was one of only a couple not made in China (a bit wary of the health standards) so I'll probably go with that. I did notice that the avent cups said "not suitable to use with hot drinks". I usually fill up the cup with boiling water after sterilising it in the microwave. Is that a no-no? I think I've thrown out the instructions.

I'll hit the shops again tomorrow and then throw out the Tommee Tippies (bought them originally to hopefully prevent nipple confusion but that's no longer an issue as DD has teeth and SHE BITES!!)

Would love to know how you go with that. They are the ones I have been looking at today.
