The birth of Alexis Jane was short but not so sweet lol.
It all started on Thursday the 10th of April with some very irregular contractions that felt like mild period pain, which I just put down to pre labour.
However, the following morning I had my much anticipated bloody show!! woooo hooo things were finally under way. Although things seemed to be moving my contractions were still all over the place, ranging from 30 to 5 minutes apart. After a fun filled day of nothing much happening I went to bed dissapointed.
But low and behold my Lexie had other things on her mind, I awoke to some severe contractions around 1:45am on the Saturday morning. After trying to sleep through them I knew it was a lost cause so i rang my midwife around 3am and she confirmed I was in labour. After explaining to her that I was scared she told me to come up to the hospital, which I did quite happily.
We reached the hospital around 3:30am and Gloria (my midwife) checked to see if I was dialated, which I was by 3cm. However Gloria explained to me that my cervix was not completley effaced and was both dialating and thinning out at the same time... which is not a good thing because your body is trying to do too much hard work at once. So to speed things up she did a stretch and sweep (which was excruciating), Gloria then informed me that bubbas head had changed position and was entering the birth canal at an angle, however my contractions should correct this over time.
After a further 4 hours of agonising contractions, which were all in my back even though I was having an anterior baby, I got another internal. My midwife regreted to inform me that I was only 4cm dialated and unless she intervened I would be in labour for another 24 hours... so my waters were broken manually at 8:30am.
After that every thing became a blur. I had decided I would like a water birth so the bath was filled up and I hobbled in. Who ever said a bath stops the pain was mistaken. After an hour or two in the bath I could not take the contractions any more and hopped out and moved onto the shower... which did help. The contractions werent so bad during my shower however the need to push became apparent.
After drying off I hopped on the bed and started on the gas, I just couldnt take the pain any more. After a further hour of excruciating pain I was given morphine for the pain (Gloria didnt believe in pethidine) this mixed with the gas helped for a little while.
At 12:30pm, after a hour or so of pushing through my contractions, I was given another internal and Gloria confirmed I was fully dialated except for a little bit which was stopping Lexies head from descending. So Gloria did another thing I will never forget and pushed it out of the way.... owwwy...from here on in things started moving pretty fast.
I was taken off the gas and had to push through every one of my contractions which were coming every couple of minutes and lasting for 60 seconds. After half an hour of pushing on my hands and knees, her head started to crown, the only pain I felt was the Burning sensation that shot through my entire nether-region. After half and hour of pushing her head out, the sensation of her body slithering from mine was amazing... I will never forget the feeling of pushing that tiny little life into the world. The only words I remember saying was 'were is my baby girl? where is my princess?'. As Gloria passed her to me from between my legs (I was still on my hands and knees) I burst into tears, this baby that I had nurtured inside me for 9 months, which I had loved from the moment of conception... was finally in my arms and I would never have to let her go.
After a few seconds of bonding I had to flip over on to my back so I could birth the placenta and so Gloria could asess the damage. Lexie was placed straight onto my breast so I could birth the placenta naturally. This took about 10 minutes. After the placenta was out Ben cut our daughters umbilical cord and she was finally free of my body.
I only recieved a first degree or gutter tear internally, which took 5 minutes to sew up. Since I had birthed the placenta naturally my blood loss was a bit high and I passed out. I was kept in the birthing suit for a few hours longer then usual so I could get my fluids back up and compose myself.
After a 10 hour and 4 minute labour my absolutely beautiful (i know im biased) daughter Alexis Jane came into this world at 1:34pm. She weighed 3480grams or 7 pound 11 oz, she was 49 cm long with a head cer. of 34 cm.
