I am a mum to a 5 month old baby and during that pregnancy I got really high blood pressure which has not gone down since he was born. I am now on medication for it which is fine. DH and I are discussing TTC later this year, however we BD about 10 days ago without protection. I got pregnant the first time with DS1 and realised that I was probably ovulating when we BD last week. It is too early for me to do a pregnancy test yet, but I am panicking as the BP meds that I am on are C class and shouldn't be taken during pregnancy or if TTC. I don't want to get into a big fluster over nothing, but now am worrying about whether I am pregnant. Should I continue as I have been and continue taking the meds until after pregnancy test/period? I am confused about what to do, but don't want to put a baby at risk.

Hi

I would contact your doctor and have a chat with him/her .

Good luck.

I would go and see your doc ... maybe you could have your meds changed now as a precaution.

According to my Doc, Methyldopa is the only acceptable blood pressure meds to use during pregnancy.

I will be switching to this when I have had 3 hba1c blood tests (am diabetic) in a row under 7% and my endo is happy for me to ttc again.

I have had high bp since the night before my Ruby was born (heart bub) and on meds ever since. During my first pregnancy, I was on methyldopa from the day I confirmed at the docs that I was pregnant- it controlled my bp beautifully.

Often, your bp will actually go down in pregnancy and you will be able to come off meds completely hence the fact that you will be closely monitored.

I hope all is well for you :flowerz:

I actually don't believe this to be true. I was on aldomet (methyldopa) when I developed PE with my DS and started at 32 weeks. However I had a very bad side effect after he was born. We thought I had developed PND. However, when I saw the physician that was managing my blood pressure until it stabilised he immediately stated that he had placed me on another blood pressure medication specifically the last time I saw him so that he could take me off the Aldomet so as to avoid this problem (apparently depression is a common side effect). It didn't happen while pregnant though.

My GP put me on Labetolol about a year ago as my blood pressure was playing up know that this was a safe pregnancy med. Now pregnant, I discussed the situation with my ob who only handles high risk pregs at Frances Perry House and his order of attack is Labetolol, Nefedipine and lastly Aldomet. He too agrees that though Aldomet does work the side effects can be somewhat harsher than those for Labetolol.

Only down point of Labetolol is that it has a slightly sedating effect (not so bad for me as I'm generally an anxious person anyway.)

Good luck.
