View Full Version : My bub doesnt stand on his feet yet??
Hi,
Need some advice...
My son is 19 weeks old and he wont stand on his feet with support yet. All of the other babies around us are doing it and have been for a while. I am told all babies are different but I just want to see if any other bubs are the same???
When I try to stand him up he just bends his knees and one leg just kicks back or he bends it up. Is this normal?? He has tiny feet. He is not a fat baby, maybe a little chubby baby fat but nothing over the top, could this cause him to not stand because he cant support his weight?
One midwife told me its not a problem and he will do it when he is ready ( which I am happy with) but another told me to try standing him on all different surfaces to stimulate him to want to stand???
Any advice would be great. I understand all babies develop at different rates so Im not too concerned , would just like to hear if anyone elses bub is the same.
Thanks,
Leanne

My advice is..don't worry! Bubs do everything in their own time, and in the 6 months I've known my DD, the one thing I've learnt is I can't make her do anything she doesn't want to do:D
My Bub hasn't enjoyed/wanted to stand on her legs until about a week ago..and now that's all she wants to do!

My little girl is a fatty and she was standing early on - so I'm sure weight is not an issue at all. She also had tiny feet.
My guess is that your son just doesn't WANT to stand just yet. Some babies are eager to try new things, whereas others are frighted and just don't want to.
Now, I'm no expert on anything, but in a book I was reading (What to Expect in the First Year...the Sequel to What to Expect When You're Expecting), it suggested NOT to try and force your child to stand as your child will naturally do it when his muscles and bones are strong enough and when he is ready. Forcing him to do it, according to the book, could just make him afraid of you and learn that you are not to be trusted.
I think a little encouragement to do so would be helpful, but trying to MAKE him do it would be not the best of ideas.
I'm sure your son is perfectly fine and will do so whenever he is ready to.
When I try to stand him up he just bends his knees and one leg just kicks back or he bends it up.
My DD does this too...she also kinda stands on the sides of her feet alot of the time.
Do you put bub in a jolly jumper or anything like that? I have noticed that the last couple of times DD has been in hers she has been putting her feet on the floor alot flatter for some of the time...the rest of the time she just spins around on her toes, future ballerina maybe??
I'm sure it is nothing to worry about...before we know it they'll be running around the place :)
Oh, my DD was born Nov 17 2005, so she is very close in age to your bub :)

My DD is 8 months old and STILL doesn't do it! But i guess they will in their own time. Having said that, if she doesn't start to do it in the next couple of months, i'll be getting worried, and getting her checked out. I wouldn't worry too much at 19 weeks, she could be doing it in the next week or two!
I wouldn't be worried at all. My 7.5 month old has just this past week started to hold her own weight on her legs.
It's a reflex for them it just happens.
My CHN asked me at our 6 month check if we were doing it yet and we weren't and she said that's perfectly fine..........she will start soon, and she did!
19 weeks is still nothing to worry about at all :D
Thanks heaps to everyone who replied! Its good just to hear from someone else that its perfectly normal!
I guess one day when im chasing him around the place I will wish he was back at this stage again LOL!!!:)
Thanks:hugs:
