View Full Version : What temp wash for cloth nappies?
I have just finished the initial washing of my new pocket nappies.
Tell me though, I get the dry pail procedure, but the washing bit I need some help on.
Do I have this right?
1. Cold wash first
2. Hot wash next
3. Hang to dry in sun which will also bleach any remaining stains
And the hot wash bit - I have two temps on my machine. I have a 60 degree wash or a 95 degree wash. Which would you be using?
I must admit I wash most things, except towels sheets and workclothes, in a cold wash so this is pretty new to me.
Thanks!

My laundry is down the back of my yard, it has no hot water. I always wash on cold, and never had a n issue. Just make sure you dry them in the sun, or in a dryer. (for germ killing properties..)

I've been using the 95 degree wash on mine, but I'm just using flannelette flats.
My logic was that my mother and grandmother used to boil nappies in a gas copper, and none of us got nappy rash. Seems to be working for me this time around, and there have not been any stains when I have gone to hang them out.
BTW, one dozen of the nappies I am using my mother used for my younger brother (now in his 30's). Those nappies are in better condition than the ones I soaked in Napisan when I used them with DD#1.
I should have also mentioned I do a pre-wash (so basically a rinse) before the hot wash.

I cold rinse mine, then hot wash at 60deg and tumble dry unless they're stained and then sun dry as it bleaches it better than any product ever could!
I used to cold wash mine and found DD was getting a lot of nappy rash, I tried soaking in napisan (which isnt reccommended for use with the nappies I use but I thought I had to try) and this didnt improve it either, only the hot wash did the trick!

Seriously I wouldn't bother doing both a cold and a hot wash! One or the other is not both!;)
Hot will help kill any germs, but then again so will the sun!
So do you think the 95 degree wash will do the job? Not too damaging on the nappies?

Are they PUL? I would be hesitant to wash it such a hot temp... And the elastic may not last as long either.

If they are PUL pocket nappies you shouldnt use a high temp so a warm wash is sufficient as it will ruin the elastic etc over time.
On my pockets i use a cold wash sometimes doing a pre rinse if we have explosive poos but both cold then i line dry in the sun. Come winter our line doesnt get any sun so i will be using the dryer.
As oscar's mum said you need one of the following either sun dried as the sun kills the germs, a warm/hot wash or warm tumble dry.
Good luck :)
oh honey you are making WAY too much work for yourself!!!!
I dry pail - then do a cold wash with 1/2 measure of detergent - then sun or dryer to finish them off... I DO do hot washes now and then - specially if we have ummm an explosion??? and I'm worried about removing the stains... (just to change the routine a little... ) - but I would NEVER wash my nappies twice!!! (no WAY... :D)
oooh and PUL can go in the dryer - but on WARM not HOT setting ... so I would assume it would be the same for the washing machine - warm... but not really hot???
- dont be afraid to email sasha or ruth at www.greennappies.com if you want to double check - I have found them to be absolutely wonderful and friendly :)
(which is impressive really - cause I tend to nag a bit when I want my nappies  )

Got it! I think we will go with a warm wash and on the line or in the dryer in Winter..
Thanks you ladies........I shouldn't really be worroed.....I only have two after all (so far) !! :D
