Hi Everyone

I found out I was pregnant at 4 weeks last week, unexpectedly, at the time having a slightly sore throat.
This developed over that weekend to being a very nasty cough and I presented at the GP on the Monday morning with what he thought to be a mild case of pneumonia.
He prescribed E-Mycin antibiotics, ordered blood tests and sent me home for a few days rest.
This morning, (now 5 weeks pregnant) he called me and advised that my blood tests are showing me as having whooping cough (pertussis), he also mentioned having "conflicting results" (whatever that means) and I have to go back and see him this afternoon.

Just wondering if anyone else has had any experiences with this in their early pregnancy and what the outcome was? Also, if anyone knows if this kind of infection can effect the pregnancy?

E-Mycin really isnt worthwhile if you already have it but hey you are on it now !

From my understanding the real risk with WC lays in the final trimester of pg so things should be 'ok'. That being said other issues may complicate things because it can also cause pneumonia to set in if you cop a full dose etc. So it really is best asking your g.p when you go back about all the ins & outs.

The "conflicting results" are because its hard to determine whether you have it just from blood tests alone you basically have to ride it out a little longer & see whether the cough develops & then get another test done.

I had WC a few years ago now & it was really awful cause even though i was an adult i copped a full dose & was out of action in terms of work & life itself for a good 6mths. I copped pneumonia etc & now even have issues with my lungs being scarred so i have to have the flu vax every year to help me in regards to getting to 'sick'.

But remember mine was a worse case scenario so dont freak out too much yet :hugs:
