View Full Version : unbiased, accurate, recent info on circumcision rates in nsw? anyone help me find it?
im expecting my 2nd son. ds 4 is not circumcised. just my opinion but im not keen to circumcise my sons. my dh is circumcised when this debate came up ds#1 was a baby i insisted that the majority of little boys in his age group are not circumcised and that it is more important to be like your mates than your dad. i won. this time around a lot of our friends have been having little boys in the last 2 yrs almost all been circumcised. their parents are telling my dh that the majority has changed and now most little boys are done. im sure this cant be right but i need proof. where can i find unbiased accurate recent information on circumcision rates for newborns/toddlers in nsw ? any help much appreciated. thanks
p.s. not looking for a debate, or reasons to or not to. im aware of both sides of this debate only care to consider the current trend. ive no intention to offend anyone

:iagree: These (http://www.cirp.org/library/statistics/Australia/) rates are from medicare from 2004.
hmm thank u millner but am looking for more recent info have medicare released info since then? specifically 2007/2008 info. also i presume these figures would not include circumcisions done privately? so would therefore be inaccurate? correct me anyone if i am wrong.
also please do not reply anyone who just cares to state their own opinion, there r plenty of threads already going i can read for everyones opinion. im just looking for info. i will make my own decision

I have done a LOT of searching to more recent data and that's the only info that I can find from an unbiased source. You are right it would not include private patients.
Try google and see what you can find.
Also, if you would like to see the current trends have a look at the polls that have been done here on BH.
thanks milliner, thats the same trouble im having too cant find anything recent unbiased local and would include private and public patients. it would seem tho that its still less than 50 percent.

Whatever info you do find you will see it's well under 50% more closer to 15%.

I believe it is about 10%.
My cousin had their son done in Ballarat nearly 2 years ago and that is the information that they were provided with by the hospital staff. Not sure if it was for just Victoria, or the whole of Australia though.
The 10% isn't really a good indication though because it is more likely to be 1 to 2% in the general population and much higher in areas with certain religions and races.

In the US the stats are always a few years behind, unfortunately.
It takes time to extrapolate and publish the data.
This may be true for other countries as well.

wouldnt that data still include private patients?
when i have had private health care or procedures ive still put in a medicare claim, and thats what the data is looking at, the number of claims.
even if it didnt include private, it is really unlikely that private could make the data up to be the majority of babies circumsised.
so if you want your boy to be like the majority of his peers, leaving him intact is the way to go
thanks everyone. i really think from what i can find its prob around 20 percent give or take a bit. its prob just bad luck that all our friends seem to be doing it. was thinking may ask at my sons daycare as in ask the teachers i mean as they see a lot, wasnt sure if its in poor taste though? i did however find some interesting pics of the procedure to show my dh in hopes of putting him off, and ive put my foot down and insisted he will not be chopping anything off my son. but i just couldnt believe the trend had swayed that much. i feel a lot better about it now thanks

As you can see from the chart the rate is NSW in 2007
was 18.5% for under 6 month olds.
A factor in the increase might be an increase in the Muslim population in NSW (high birth rate).
Rates in Australia are lower than what some people assume.

Thanks for posting that, I wondered too because I had heard people say that it was on the rise.
I didn't know how that could be true, Asher was born in Lismore Northern NSW (we are from Ballina tho ) and if you live in that area the closest place you can go to get you boy done is Brisbane (3 hours away)
I would assume if it was becoming so common people wouldn't have to drive that far.

just curious... are the stats based on where the procedure is performed or where the patient lives?

Nationally the rate is about 10%.
I would think the Medicare data would include private procedures as well because they still claim.
And I'm not sure that it can be done under the public system now anyway if it's elective?
