 Just looking for a bit of reassurance here from anyone in the know

Found out yesterday (via a midwife's call...didn't even think to question my ob before that ...too busy worrying about bubs deciding to turn transverse!) that I have tested positive to Strep B....did a little bit of internet looking and it all looks fairly overwhelming (and lots of variety in how different people address the issues, ie some take a wait and see, others automatically give bubs antibiotics etc...and that's all before the stress of keeping a close eye on bubs in that first 7 days....some of those issues sound frightening!!!). My ob seemed fairly laid back about it all (since I/the bumpam past the very high risk stage of 37 weeks) ...as he is about most things, and I know that I will go straight onto antibiotics once I get in to the hospital, but can anyone expand on this from their knowledge/experience

Thanks!

I tested positive for Strep B a few weeks ago.

Did they give you oral antibiotics to have? I was given a 7 day course of it and will be tested for it again tomorrow to see what's happening.

I was told I was to have a drip in when Im in labour to prevent it being passed to Bub's.

A friend of mine told me the other day that it's not always there in your body either, it can come and go.

I would speak to your OB and Midde about your concerns.

This may help in the meantime :)

hi!

i tested positive for strep b while pg with dd. i wasnt too worried because my ob gave me no reason to be! while i was in labour i just had a drip of antibiotics and bub came out fine (well no strep b infection anyway!)

i think something like 5 % of women have it!

and i was also told just to make sure i rang my ob straight away if my waters broke (or leaked) because after 24 hours i think they worry about the baby getting infected.

try not to stress to much about it!! and goodluck with the rest of your pregnancy!

I had it while pg with DS. It is not a routine test in the UK so only found out I had it as I insisted on the test being done!
I had a drip while in labour and gave birth to a healthly boy. As long as it has been detected there should be no need to worry. Its only usally passed on to bubs through the vagina at birth this is why you have a drip in labour.

We were discussing this the other day and the stats were:
20-30% of pregnant women carry it and 7 babies per 10,000 get sick.

Ahhh..... the evils of googling!!! Don't try looking it up because it will stress you even more because I did!!

I also tested positive to Strep B a few weeks before the birth - they just give you antibiotics when you are in labour (via a drip).

Yep...there's certainly issues related to easy access to info

Thanks all - have made me feel a lot better about the whole lot! Only had 2 hrs last time between waters beaking and DD arriving, so hopefully that'll help keep it all in the lower risk side of things

All info and stories much appreciated
