Hi everybody

My baby is 7 weeks old and everyday during the day i put her in the bouncer where she falls asleep and I leave her there until she wakes up again so i can have her next to me while I do my work.
This is only during the day.

My mother has just come over and is horrified that i dont move her to her cot where she can stretch out and lie flat she says. She claims the bouncer is bad for her back.
So im wondering is my mum right about this ? or does it matter at all ?

I used to leave my DS1 to fall asleep in the bouncer quite often and it never did him any harm! My health nurse always told me not to coz he would get used to it and not fall asleep in the cot when I wanted him to. I didn't find this to be true either :). I think you just need to do what makes you and bubs happy and if this is working for you then its fine.
Not sure about whether or not its bad for their back?? But my son never had any probs!! Depends on the bouncer I guess.
With my DS2 I let him fall asleep on my breastfeeding pillow after a feed and left him there for up to a few hours on the couch. I found that as long as he slept we were all happy!! Good luck...

boymummy, I did that and I had massive troubles getting her to go to sleep in her cot later on. But every baby is different!

You do what you have to do. Our mothers only remember the good times of having a baby, so I wouldn't worry about it! Your baby, so you decide how you should raise her.

The bouncer is the only place DS would sleep for the first couple of months of his life during the day. I agree, if you and bubs are happy, then it's fine. Just nod your head and say 'oh ok' and ignore the advice if it's not what you want to do.
Unfortunatley, you will get lots of 'well meaning' advice from friends family adn strangers now that you have a child, and it's up to you to 'filter' it all and work out what works for you:)
Good luck and congrats!

I did the same DD3 would fall asleep in her bouncer and I would leave her to sleep, as they say let sleeping babies sleep :) .

My daughter doesn't have probs with her back and she also sleeps in her cot quite comfortably now to.

:iagree: boymommy as long as they slept we were all happy.

Good Luck.

I did whatever worked and kept DS happy for the first 12 weeks. I found he would change so frequently anyway that nothing was habit forming. From around the 3 months we started actually initiating a "sleep time routine" ie feeding him then laying him on his cot and he was fine, adjusted perfectly. I also wouldnt see it would cause any probs for their backs.

As I write this my baby is asleep in his bouncer - he's 7 weeks old tomorrow. I did it with the others and never had a problem. I'm like Shanz - we do whatever for the first 3 months and then when things are a bit more settled and we can see more of a routine to what the baby does, then we start thinking about settling in a cot. Also this is the age when we move our babies from the bassinette to the cot.

this is SO true .
Oh my mum is just so chuffed about her grandaughter - sometimes her endless advice drives me round the twist :dizzy:
Gets a bit too much! ..but... she means well and only wants whats best i spose.

We had DD sleep in her automatic swing (Fisher Price Cradle Swing) during the day and have only just stopped this in the last month (she is now 5 months). She now sleeps in her cot and has had no problems moving to that.
Cant imagine how it would be bad for their backs as long as they are laying flat at some point during the day and overnight... think of them growing all squished up in the womb!

Gotta love mothers and all their wizdom :D :bee:

My mum told me to say "Thanks, I'll keep that in mind" when other people gave me unwanted advice. On occasion, I said it to her as well! :p

Do whatever works for you and your baby!

My DD slept in the cot, in the bouncer, in her pram, on my lap, on the floor... everywhere!

I've never heard that before..

My LC who is a CHN thought it was great that I let DD sleep in her bouncer during the day and in my bed at night :D

I too let DS sleep in his rocker during the day. I think that the key is to start putting them in their cot after they are a few months old (if you want to try to avoid any problems with them settling in their cots). While a newborn you shouldn't have any problems. I started to move DS out of the rocker and into his cot by 12 weeks.

We didn't have any issues with his back.

And congratulations on your baby girl too!

I do the same. Infact my 7 week old is in the bouncer right now!

I did the same with DD1 and I never had problems getting her into her cot. She has always been a great sleeper. But I guess every child is different.

I used to use the bouncer instead of a portacot when we went away ... I had no qualms about using it for long periods - I just made sure that my kids got a heap of tummy time, floor time and slept in their cot at night.

They are now 5 and 7 and neither have back problems ...

My 6 week old daughter sleeps in her bouncer all day and sometimes half the night!!

I am worried about her developing a sleep association... but I figure once she gets to 12 weeks I'll start "putting my foot down".

She is only just now waking up from a lovely 4 hour nap in her bouncer... I love that thing! Her big brother would only sleep in there when he was little too.
