we co-sleep with our DS and he sleeps fine from 9.30-12 and wakes up for feeds about every hour/hour and a half from midnight. this is ok with me cos i can just go back to sleep as soon as he is latched on. however from 3am onwards he groans and grunts in his sleep and eventually wakes up crying.

has anyone had this experience? sometimes it seems he might have some gas cos he farts after i do bicycle legs on him. however even he falls back asleep he still does this on the next hour. however if i put him to sleep on his tummy while on me, he doesn't do this at all.

any ideas on what the reason is for the groaning and grunting and how to stop it?

If he's farting after you do bicycle legs then it's probably wind.

My DS does the same thing, grunts and snorts and grunts and snorts for AGES, then he settles back down to sleep.

How old is your DS?

he is 12 weeks old. it's odd though cos sometimes he does this when it's time for him to wake him up and as soon as we get up he is fine and stops grunting and groaning.

My DD used to do the same thing after I put her down after a middle of the night feed and it would keep me awake for ages but she was asleep. I don't think she does it anymore - she's been in her own room from 8 weeks so I can't know for sure but I never hear it when I get up to go to the toilet and, even though she's in another room, I still wake up to the slightest noise from her.

Hi, we went through this with DS at around this age too. He would grunt and groan from about 4am, between the 8 and 12 week mark. It often coincided with him filling his nappy. He has stopped doing it now though.
