View Full Version : What age for 'big bed'?
Just wondering at what age your bubs went into a bed?
My DD is 15 mths old and climbing up and down quite well and I'm thinking she can't be far off!

I put DD1 into a big bed at 18 months, but i think it's generally when they seem ready, and can climb on and off aliright by themselves.
all of ours were very active and kept climbing out of the cot early so they were all in big beds by 12 to 13 months, they also had side rails so they didnt fall out onto the floor. they preferred the big bed compared to the cot.
DD was in her big bed by 22 months but only because it took so long for her bed to get here! (we are in Townsville and bought it from a baby shop in Sydney). She absolutely loves it and we've never had a problem with her climbing out.:)
My DD is 14 months and we have just bought her a 'big bed'.
She loves it!!
Good luck!!
Ds is 14 months and I can't imagine he will be ready for ages.
When do they start sleeping under the blankets? (Ds won't even lie down in bed while I'm in his room - he just stands up and shakes the side of the cot really hard for ages)
My first son was in a big bed at 15 months, my daughter was 18 months, and my youngest son was 17.
As long as the child can climb up and down off a bed or couch on their own without falling, then they are ready for their big bed.
You can get a variety of side rails to stop them falling out, but they are expensive. I just put pillows under the materess between the frame of the bed and the mattress. This made a "hill" on the side of the bed, making it harder for them to roll up hill to fall out. Saved on the cost of the side rail, and none of my kids ever fell out of bed.
I seem to go later and later with each child when it comes to putting them in a 'big bed'.....mainly because I like my sleep, and if my 2 year old could get himself out of bed, I would sleep right through a whole tonne of mischief and mayhem that he would set out to create (see my avatar for an example!).... also, especially with another baby on the way, I need somewhere to contain him for his own safety when I'm sorting the newborn out each morning..... Luckily he likes playing in his cot of a morning, I put a few toys and books in there, and he also talks & sings to himself in the mirror...
essentially I can control him of a morning whilst he is in the cot.....I imagine he will be booted out just before our new baby transfers from moses basket to needing to use the cot in about 9 months time.....
I'm just so lazy :o

I'm with you becca - I want to keep my DS in his cot as long as possible, as at least he's not out and about getting into naughty mischief!

my friend put her DD i her big bed at 18 mths i put my DS in at 20 months. They both did well. We both us the safety 1st bed rail too :)
I'm actually hoping to get my money's worth out of our VERY expensive cot that we bought!!! So the longer the better I say  !!! Although it does convert to a small bed anyway, but hopefully we can keep him in that for a while too! He's only 9 mths at the moment so I'm assuming that he'll be in his cot for a while before we need to drop it the the bed, which has side rails too... Let's just hope it was worth the money and lasts as long as we'd hoped for!

My oldest ds was 18 months when he went into his big bed, youngest son is 14 months and is nowhere near ready for a big bed yet lol.
can i ask a stupid question how do u know when they are ready to go to a big bed???
I think that when they seem very confident in their movements for example being able to climb up and down without any problems- then that may be a good sign.
Also with my daughter she is a very restless sleeper and tends to move around alot bumping into the bars and she gets her legs caught sometimes.
So I'm thinking that she could get a better nights sleep in a big bed!
Might wait a bit longer but I am looking out for a big bed for her and may even use that pillow idea under the mattress to keep her from falling out while sleeping! :-)

my son is turning one on the 25th of this month. he has been walking since 10 months. and for 2 weeks he has been climbing down off everything really well.im not sure if i should try to keep in his cot longer or face up to the fact he is growing up and get him a bed  me and DP were thinking about getting DS a racign car bed coz they are low to the ground. DS seems to like sleeping on mummy and daddys bed more then in his cot so am i right he needs a bed?

I actually just took the cot out od the girls room yesterday. Nette has been sleeping in her big girl bed for a few nights (but many afternoon sleeps) now and I decided it was time to take it out. Last night was no dramas. I have to get up early anyway to get Owen off to school (he leaves at 7.30) and usually she is still asleep by then anyway - so no worry about her getting up to anyhting while I'm asleep.

Braydyn was around 2 yrs old when I got his bed. He was never a kid to climb much and didn't try to get out of his cot... it was plenty roomy so I left him in it.
I didn't worry about when he was able to climb on and off the bed as much as at what point it was no longer safe for him to be in the cot cos he would try to get out and possibly fall. If he'd been doing that... he'd have been out sooner.
He was excited to get his "big bed" and went into it really well for at least 2 mths. I didn't use a side rail, I put the cot mattress on the floor beside him and he did fall out a few times but it helped him learn that he could fall out... now he doesn't.

i tried putting amber in the big bed the other night and all she did was bang on the door... then tried it for naps today... she was in the cot to start with but then pulled her nappy off and wet the sheets so i put her in the big bed to give it a go and she ended up pulling all her bedding outta the draws, took her nappy off again and wet all over the bedding!! nothing left clean to put on the cot or bed :devil6:
i dont know anymore - im just keeping her in the cot now cuz it contains her more, i caught her climbing out last week with a leg either side of the rails so i know she wont be kept back much longer. and everynight before bed she points at the big bed wanting to go in there - but that just leads to wanton destruction in all its glory :banghead:
completly lost as to which direction to go - bed or cot? and which i can cope with more :)
