I Love my Jolly Jumper, I used one with DS #1 and DS#2 has just started using his for about 15 minutes a day - normally in the evening to help get him all nice and tired and ready for

but

I know the contraversy about not using any equipment that encourages babes to stand B4 they can crawl....

DS#1 didn't walk until he was 14 months old but I don't think using a Jolly Jumper slowed his development process.... What do you think about using this type of equipment to help entertain bubs?

Hi Jordy&jacksmum

When he was little Samuel absolutely loved his jolly jumper, he was in it every day. We were told at our mother's group meetings by the Maternal & Child Health Nurse about how they could slow down development and stuff but I know just about every one of us used one. Samuel started walking at 11 months so I don't think it slowed him down at all.

It's not like you leave them in there for hours on end so I couldn't see the harm.

Everything in moderation. I think the problem with all of these items that are generally discouraged to all mums are because of the few mums who don't use them properly.

Follow all the directions of the manufacturer and use it wisely.:ecomcity:

I used one for DS and he walked at 12mths...I put DD in it a couple of times a week, but she's not to fussed on it right now, maybe in a few more mths.

My mum used one with all 5 of us and we ALL walked at between 8.5 - 9.5mths. My nephew used one every day and he walked at 10mths.

I don't think they slow anything down...unless bub is in it all the time and not given any opportunity to develop other skills.

ozzy's enjoying his, we got it a couple of weeks ago - as mamabear said, everything in moderation. he still gets plenty of floor time, chair time, hug time etc :)
i have a question though - how the *&^% do you get the baby in and out on your own?? i have such a hard time with it - the clips are too strong for me to strap him into it all then attach him and it's really akward inserting a wriggly baby when it's already attached! any suggestions or magic tricks to it or am i just incompetent :o

have you tried unhooking it, so the only bit hanging is the springy bit?
ds loved his since he was 3months and able to hold his head up, he would dance to the music and watch me vaccum(whilst dancing like a twit).
I would lay him down and strap him in. then I could pick him up by the big blue bar ,and sometimes wander around investigating like he was a little puppet on a string!! he loved it! he has always had strong legs and been able to walk around holdin someones hands since 7months, he is now 9months and courageously taking off from the furniture on his own( the other day he made it about 10metres...with me 1step behind him) So I can't say it slowed his development...I also wouldn't say it sped the process up as little ones develop at their own pace and the range of "normal" is quite broad.

I didn't have a Jolly Jumper, but I did have a similar thing. DD loved it. She was walking at 10 months so it couldn't have affected her that much. It is like everything with babies, if it is for a short period of time and you supervise them then seriously what harm is it doing? Isn't a happy baby better than a bored one?

DS LOVED his jolly jumper. It was one of the best investments we ever got for him. And my MCHN said it was absolutely fine to use as long as it wasn't for long periods.:)

We have only had ours for 2 days, and ds is starting to get the hang of it. I find that by the time I feed him, give him tummy time, go for a walk, read to him, and let him play on the floor, there's not that much time for the jolly jumper anyway. he probably has spent about 30 minutes in it a day (in a few different times) so far, but I can see the novelty wearing off and him not using it every day. I was told by someone from gymbaroo (but I don;t go) that it's bad for them, but She also said that gymbaroo was essential. Perhaps a bit biased. Surely a little time each day can't hurt

Was hoping for advice about when might be a good time to buy one of these - I've always thought they looked like great fun. DS is 4 months old and has good head control but cannot sit up by himself yet. Is he ready for a Jolly Jumper yet?

We only just purchased a jolly jumper today. After a few minutes of confusion she started going bezerk with it and loved every second. She must have felt really enpowered being able to move around under her own steam. :smiliedance:

As with everything in life I think it's fine in moderation. I can see her really getting a kick out of this new toy (excuse the pun :P ) . We bought it because she was already getting enjoyment out of kicking off our stomachs/theighs and being lifted up into the air (which trust me gets extremely tiring :)

I think it depends on the brand. My DS is four and a half months old with excellent head control but doesn't sit up on her own yet (although she sits very well while supported and is good at doing assisted 'situps' into the sitting position).

The brand we have says that it is suitable for babies with good head control (and no other requirements). It's called "the original jolly jumper" and is designed to keep the pressure away from the spine.

^^ I could only find a canadian site with the details but it looks like exactly the same model that I purchased from Big W today (I have also seen it in Toys R Us)

Jacob spent an hour at a time in his 3-4 times a day from the age of 2mths and he loved it!!! He walked at 10mths, so it certainly didn't slow him down.

And before you all bite my head off for putting him in it at that age, he could hold his head up properly at 6wks and was sitting at 3mths.

Hello,

We were given a jolly jumper but unfortunately without any instructions on how to put it together, hang it or lace it etc.

I think it is the original version.

It has shoe laces around the chair seat area which I don't know if that is how the item is meant to be.

If someone could pm the instructions to me, if they are able to scan the instructions into your computer it would be greatly appreciated.:smiliedance:

I have tried doing a google search but no luck in finding any instructions.

Cheers!

NP natsmummy :)

lros34 sounds like the version I have :)

Here is a photo of what it looks like when she is wearing it:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/-magpie-/175294478/

What you do is:

1. Find a spot to attach it either using the clamps (can be used on doorways with a wide enough rim) or use the pigtail hook by examining your roof and finding a sturdy wooden bearer, drilling a hole and screwing it in. Make sure that you test the sturdyness/stability of it, by placing as much of your own weight on it as you can.

2. Attach the chain to the clamps or the pigtail hook. You want it at a height so that your bubs toes touch the ground (as opposed to their entire foot)

3. To attach the seat. Lay her on top of the cloth harness with the strap with the clip studs approximately 1 inch below her armpits. Do up the studs. The strap with the shoelaces goes between your bubs legs. Thread the shoelaces into the eyeholes and tie. Then tuck it into the strap that is going around your bubs chest (so they can't untie it).

4. Clip on the nylon straps onto the plastic cross bar.

5. Lift your bubs up and attach the swivel clip from the chain onto the top of the plastic crossbar.

Make sure that wherever you attach it there is enough room for your bubs to swing and bounce around without hitting anything (even where I have it atm I am a little concerned she might hit the doorframe). So the more room the better.

If your bubs is anything like mine they will go beserk on it, and I would not leave them unattended while using it. I also only use it for short stretches at a time - approx 5 mins.

Hope that helped and enjoy! :)
