Hey, any other Aussie mums in the US? I'm in Minnesota, and have been living overseas for just over eighteen months. My husband's born and bred here, hence why I'm here -- the crazy things we do for love, eh? ;)

Not me, but just have a question or maybe a few for you though lol.
We are thinking of picking up and moving to Miami where my dh has family. How did you find it moving there, what was the biggest adjustment for you?
What did you do in regards to organising the move iykwim? did you sell up everything and move or did you have furniture shipped etc??

sorry all the questions but i'm trying to weigh up the pros and cons of us moving while our five boys are still small.

Hey, BlessedWithBlue

We are thinking of picking up and moving to Miami where my dh has family. How did you find it moving there, what was the biggest adjustment for you?
I think the biggest shock for me was how much I missed my family. I didn't expect to be so homesick. In a practical sense, I'd say the biggest adjustment was grocery shopping! Learning the different brands, the different types of food that aren't common back in Aus, etc.

I moved over here to be with my husband (my visa took so long to arrive, we spent the first ten months of married life on separate continents :() - before then, I'd only ever lived at uni or at home so I didn't have any furniture anyway. I owuld say it depends on how much you're willing to pay for shipping. A lot of smaller things I had - lots of clothes, for example - I had to leave behind because I didn't want to ship anything. I basically managed to fit my life into two overstuffed suitcases (plus my guitar case). It was interesting!!

If you do end up moving while your boys are small, all I can say is WOW and YOU ARE BRAVE!

Hope that helps, good luck with whatever you decide :)

Thanks for the info, it has certainly helped hearing from someone who has made the move.
We are still debating whether to do it while the boys are still young or whether to wait until they are a bit older. We are thinking maybe it would be a good idea to postpone for a few years but i guess we will see what happens with dh's work etc.

thanks again you have helped a lot!!

SuzQ - can I ask what your DH does in the navy?

My DH is in too and I have often asked him what are the chances of getting something o/s, just as a experience.

What a wonderful time for you and your family. I wish you all the luck in thr world for a smooth move. :)

Hi everyone, I'm not sure if you are even checking this forum anymore as it looks like it has been a few months.

I just wanted to let you all know, in case you already didn't, about a great Aussie/Kiwi expat web site for those in the USA.

It is: www.matesupover.com (http://www.matesupover.com)

It is full of great info and if you go to "The Pub" that's the msg board where most hang out.

I am an Aussie married to an American (now a former US Marine) and I lived in the USA for 8 years before we both moved to Oz in 2006. We lived in a no. of different states (including the last 3 years in Central Florida for those moving there - LOVED Florida! :)) - so if you have any questions please feel free to email me at O_Brienjc@hotmail.com

Or esp visit that web site, it's a very welcoming community!

Cheers and good luck. :)
Jodie :)

My daughter lives in Central Florida - she works for Walt Disney World.

Too hot for me to live there though.

So where else did you live? How did you like the other places?

Hi StillDad. :) So your daughter lives in Orlando. I LOVE Orlando. We lived in Leesburg, Lake County, outside of Orlando but went to ORL for our fun (or Tampa, in the other direction).

I loved FL because I'm from QLD so was soo happy to get back to a warm state after having lived in northern states for years LOL

To answer your question we also lived in Asheville, North Carolina (up in the mountains - LOVED it), Charlotte, NC (hated it - nice place to visit, not to live), Boston, MA (loved it, reminds me of Brisbane except too bloody cold and winter for far too long) and outside of Pittsburgh, PA.

Please pass along that web site to your daughter in case she might be interested! Actually the lady who runs the web site and her American hubby also live in Orlando! :)

Anyone still around on this thread??

I moved to New York from Melbourne in March 2008 for my hubbies work.

Its an amazing city and I cannot be anymore thankful for all the great travel I have done in the last 18months.

We are TTC our first now.

Anyone else out there?

Would be great to see other Aussies.

Hi sparklesare

My hubby & I and 2 kids are thinking of moving to NY from brissie for my hubbys work! So, I have some questions.....How are you finding it? Is it really very expensive? Where are you living? Was it hard to get a visa?

Any advice would be appreciated!!

All the best for the birth of your twins btw!
