View Full Version : Weird Symptoms!

Because one of our favourite topics of conversation seems to be our ailments. I thought I'd start this thread, so we can compare notes to make ourselves feel better.
It seems like many of us are on the same page symptoms wise and have had our worried moments...asking, "What's wrong with me??? and then get reminded "you're pregnant!"
What's weird to some is normal to others, so any symptoms that worry you are welcome ..it's great to get feed back, it is re-assuring to read about other people's experiences to know you're not alone.
(Don't forget:(if the symptoms are really weird or you're really worried- visit emergency, hospital, doctor or midwife asap)

I get the burps after a number of different things.
I had fried rice today and got the burps and a hot feeling in my neck..I tried all these different things to relieve the problem, ginger tea, peppermint tea..finally miso soup helped.
Another strange thing I get is a pushing feeling in my bottom. it hurts a bit sometimes from sitting for a while..not sure what that is!
welcome to pregnacy!!! lol burping and a sore bottom lol!
Burping is something i had in both my previous pregnancies but not yet this time around. time will tell.
right now i feel tired all the time, i forgot how bad it is, not mentally tired like in the first trimester, but physically tired all the time... grrr
and depression as soem of you all ready know, what a crapy way to try and enjoy your pregnacy, although right now i feel pretty darn good:)

I've been very gassy (both ends! LOL! :o) and very tired. I'm also noticing my growing belly more and more now - when I bend down, I feel like I bend from below my boobs rather than my waist cuz that's where my belly starts!! Thankfully the nausea has settled now, but I still want to eat anything that isn't nailed down, I'm constantly hungry! Coming up to 17 weeks now and looking forward to meeting him/her again at the 20 week scan :smiliedance:

What is with this burping? I've had 2 kids and never had this problem. Not pregnant I NEVER hardly burp unless I've had a giant glass of coke..... It is driving me crazy, especially at night when I first go to bed, I can burp 30 times and still feel the need to burp more. I hate it. My husband thinks its quite funny because now he gets to burp to his heart content and not get told off. haha.

It's so good to know I'm not alone with the burps!!!
yes and tired all the time, getting out of bed is such a chore...but then again..I also have trouble getting comfortable and I want so much room to stretch and wriggle around with pillows and all..
My man also likes to stretch out..I'm driving him nuts!
I think we need a king-size bed atleast...

Unfortunately a king size bed won't help you, especially if your man likes to stretch out as well, we have a king size bed and i always end up on the edge untill he goes to work and then the bed is all mine!!

I think I'll take this oportunity to complain about my sore back lol.
I had sciatica (sp?) pain at the end of my last pregnancy but Im already experiencing it with number2 and Im only weeks!, it makes bed time not much fun for me or hubby as Im constantly turning all night to try and get comfortable!
The end of the day after picking up Sierra has not been much fun either... and yes im bending at the knees lol. Some days I can barely walk... Is anyone else falling apart? (OMG and Im only 25!)
I seem to randomly hiccup 100 times a day, just out of the blue... as loud as any could be for only one or two.
The burps get me too, but it's the hiccups driving me a bit batty

sierrasmumI think I'll take this oportunity to complain about my sore back lol. Some days I can barely walk... Is anyone else falling apart? (OMG and Im only 25!
Amen sister! I have a bad back at the best of times and always meant to see someone to try and get it as strong as possible before we fell pregnant. Pffft. Yeah right. I had lots of things I had planned to do "before we fell pregnant" *blows raspberry* Anyhoo - I'm paying for it now. My lower back is killing already and it's only going to get soooo much worse. I barely have a little pot gut now....(just starting 17 weeks), so it's only going to get worse....and getting into bed at night is agony, I lay there and it hurts to breathe for a while  But....no point whingeing, I'm the only one who can fix it!!
The point of all this ramble though, Sierrasmum, is to say that you're 25 and falling apart and I'm 28 and not much better off!! We can suffer together :hugs:

Yay, someone to share my pain lol!.
Yeah I meant to get a new bed, get a massage/chiro... and none of that happened for me either! I am lucky though cause the back pain only seems to be when im pregnant... so hopefully this time will be the same... I dont know if I could cope living like this everyday!!

Does anyone else sometimes feel like they are splitting in two at the pelvis when they move?
Mermum
08-04-2008, 10:34 AM
Sierrasmum-Equinemum
yep I get backpain too, my back's a bit crooked anyway, but especially earlier in the pregnancy I was getting excrutiating lower back pain in the mornings. Then it was suggested on one of the other threads to try not to lie on my belly or back and stick to the sides..this has helped alot with a pillow under my belly for support.
I also do some stretches in the morning when I can and they have made a difference I think.

Does anyone else sometimes feel like they are splitting in two at the pelvis when they move?
I know I love talking about my symptoms that's probably why I started this thread!
I get sharp pains up the sides and sometimes smaller ones when I get up from sitting or smaller pains down below..but I have been told it's my ligaments stretching. I try not to make any sudden moves or twists, because I got up suddenly a couple of weeks ago and it hurt when I walked for two days.
It's important to talk to the doctor if its ongoing pain though.
CRAMPs in the legs (this a good one to talk about too)
The other day when I was waking up on my right side: my leg calf got the worst cramp and pain and I didn't move and it killed-and my calf was sore for ages afterwards. I got another one a few days later (lieing on my right side again), I moved my leg a little and it seemed to help.
Just thought I'd mention this, cos if you keep your leg too still your cramp can freeze on you and the pain can be unbearable.
 Apparently leg cramps can be common in pregancy?
cassvanm
08-04-2008, 12:09 PM
Yes Mermum, leg cramps are soooo common, particularly in late pregnancy.
My weird symptom is this:
Bit hard to describe, but it's like #3 has a string attached to the inside of my tummy, and if I turn the right way, it get a strong tug! It's not painful, but it is ... again, hard to explain. I think it gives me more of a suprise than anything. Anyone else have this symptom?
Also, TMI coming- I have bad flatulance (don't usually pop off), it smells really bad, and I do #2 a lot! not diarrhea, but just VERy regular. Sorry about the TMI guys.

Don't worry Cass, I've been exactly the same.....and....*TMI ALERT* the same with the *ahem* discharge. :o Yeesh. I've never had issues with THAT before, but now? I'm constantly in liners.....ugh. Hate them!!!

I should have read this thread before posting in the septemberies on lol.
I just mentioned that last night I rolled over suddenly and got quite a sharp pain in the lower part of my belly... I did get this last pregnancy but only when I sneezed lol, this time i can sneeze ok, but cant roll over apparently!.
Ive got a pillow fort in my bed at the moment  which seems to have eased the back pain a little, not much I can really do during the day, specially if im out.
Oh and Kayls... I know exactly what you mean!!

Ladies nothing is TMI for all of us :)
Although quick question... most of you know I seem to be suffering with period like crampy achiness on and off... more on than off lately and sometimes a bit hurty than I can handle without a panadol... i did read somewhere on here that a lady was advised to take Magnesium supplements which ease uterine cramping and also the leg cramping... i'm wondering how safe it might be and if it would help... the chemist last night said nothing is safe apart from panadol.. but as I don't take a pre-natal vit only folate I have noticed the pre-natals do include magnesium... oh im confused... the 'Birth' book says it is useful for cramps etc...
Any ideas?
KatieLou
08-04-2008, 01:48 PM
Well Pink if the prenatals have magnesium then try them and see if that helps. At least you know it's ok for pregnancy.
I've also heard that drinking tonic water is good for cramps.
I get restless jumpy legs when I'm trying to rest or relax. Man it's annoying! Apparently it's only going to get worse tough.....
PinkAngel
08-04-2008, 01:53 PM
I might just give them a go KatieLou :) are you on a pre-natal? I did hear they can make morning sickness worse but hopefully I'm out of that stage.....for now ;)
It's hard to know which ones are good...
KatieLou

I'm on the Blackmores pregnancy gold, but I think I will change to Elevit once I finish this pack. My ob recommends Elevit. Just be careful not to double up on your folate if you're already taking it.
I don't think it's effected my m/s - I'm pretty much over that now. Except today I have had lik this stomach bug, i'm trying to work out if it's pregnancy related or not. It's very different to m/s but when I describe what's going on it sounds the same. Oh well, only 2 hours of work to go and then I think I'll spend the night on the couch.
PinkAngel
08-04-2008, 02:09 PM
I have heard both Blackmores and Elevit are very good... thanks for the folate tip too!

thanks Pink :hugs: Let's hope that DH thinks that it's a good idea for me to spend the night on the couch too - I should probably be on dinner duty as he did lots last night when I worked late. Oh well, too bad - I'm making a baby! :)

I'm taking Blackmores pregnancy/breastfeeding gold. They have magnesium in them, it says to take two a day (I've been taking one a day-I'm small is my reason) I didn't get morning sickness..
Although if I eat food that doesn't agree with me I get the burps-but that is indigestion which I think is probably normal in pregnancy.
Mum2Sierra&Caelyn
08-04-2008, 05:48 PM
Im taking the blackmores brand too, I took them all the way through my last pregnancy too... the Ob didn't say either way which was better.
I hate burping it back up though!!. Dont take them with Orange juice lol!.

Just thought I'd let you know that gastro is beginning to do the rounds of Vic already Katie. A few of my friends and their kids from various places have already had it so watch out for the signs and keep your fluids up.

:hugs: Thanks CC, I'm in Melb so that might be it. I didn't get as much rest last night as I was hoping, so tonight I'm just going to veg and do nothing!
I'm feeling a bit better today, but more like m/s than yesterday, it's still weird that it came back, I hadn't had anything for weeks. It's helping a little with the consitipation though - I might be normal between the two :o
And I'm torn between eating and not eating - the baby wants me to eat but the bug doesn't want me to. Oh the dramas! :)
Gastro won't hurt the baby will it?

Good girl :yelclap: My drink of choice would be vodka but we will have to wait a long time for that lol water will do for now...
Sometimes grease can put a lining on your stomach and make it feel better... my BIL gives his kiddies bread with lots of butter on when they have a tummy upset... doesn't sound like it would work but it does... haven't been game to try it myself LOL

Hmmm where did my post go to ? Grrrrrrrr
Here goes again....Katie I forgot to mention that m/s can come and go so try your hardest to eat whatever you can and maintain your fluids. Our job as 'incubators' means that we have to eat and drink in order for bub to take whatever he/she needs (and they will) to grow. So we have to provide for them whether we like it or not....I've been there and it's no fun but worth it in the end.
Hope you feel better soon.

I have just gone and had the longest shower I have had in months and I don't even care how much water went down the drain. That sounds naughty but it was soooooooooo nice having a hot shower with no one to hassle me.
Now it's time for my own weird thing....
This is my 4th pregnancy and the first time that I have been able to stomach milk since m/s began (and stopped and began again with this one). I couldn't drink milk at all while pregnant with the other 3 but it seems that I can with this one. I can have coffee with milk, I can drink milk (which is something I NEVER do even when not pregnant), and I can even have cereal with milk on it.
Anyone else had this happen?
:hugs:

CC, pregnancy is the only time I will stand at the fridge door and swig the milk out of the container (yes, I know, very naughty). I usually don't drink milk unless with coffee or cereal, and I can't get enough sometimes when pg - when I want it, I WANT IT NOW! No time wasting by putting it in a glass - just straight down the gob!:devil:
KatieLou
09-04-2008, 10:40 AM
I'm loving my milk right now, but can't stomach it for b'fast (found that the hard way). I'm ok with it in my tea and am really enjoying a glass in the evening. I've always enjoyed a glass of milk though, I guess I'm just remembering to drink it more lately as I'm limited in other drinks.
Pink - vodka would be nice  I am so proud of myself, I have hardly even wanted a drink for the past 4 months - during summer and everything. In fact I think there's only been once that I really wanted a drink and that was when we heard some really bad news and were helping my BIL talk it out, which for him (and many men) requires alcohol. It was such depressing news that it would have been nice to drink off the edges of it - even though I know that's very bad

OK girls brace yourself... there is a TMI discharge question coming from me... don't read on if feeling faint :)
Over the past few months on and off I will sometimes get a milky/watery/whitish discharge...like watery milk funnily enough... not enough to soak a pad but at time could give a panty liner a go... today after once again getting my usual cramps I have convinced myself that it's amniotic fluid!! Yep doesn't take me long to go from calm mummy to be to neurotic why should anything good happen to me woman!!
I've read watery discharge could be a bad sign... but i have had it every week or two since the beginning... is anyone else experiencing this?
OK enough discharge talk for one post.... :hugs:

LucyB

I've been getting some of that too - some days more than others and some days it is more like CM than watery stuff.
But from what I can gather it is completely normal - I forget the name of it though (something starting with 'l'...) and will only get worse as we get further along.
Amniotic fluid smells like semen apparently - so if your doesn't smell like this them maybe no need to stress?
LucyB
09-04-2008, 03:53 PM
Aha - found the name:
It's not your imagination. During pregnancy, it's quite common to experience increased vaginal discharge. Most causes are fairly benign and normal. What you are noticing is probably simply leukorrhea -- a mild-smelling milky fluid or discharge, caused by an increased blood flow to the area around the vagina. It's probably not that different from the discharge that you experienced before you were pregnant -- there's just a lot more of it.

Amniotic fluid is clear so you're definitely NOT leaking any of that. :yelclap: LucyB got it right...it's a normal thing that happens each and every pregnancy. I was worried when it first happened to me but I now know that it's nothing to worry about.
My latest 'symptom' - i am noticing my stomach rumbling much higher up than it used to!
I think our stomachs rumble higher because our darling babies have grown and are now beginning to push all our internal organs upwards. That's often why some women feel short of breath later in pregnancy - bub has pushed their lungs upwards and therefore they're a tad squished.
Ohhh I walked all over town today for hours and hours.....when I finally got home and sat down with a coffee, I actually felt the blood rushing back to my poor little feet. How sad is that?

Here's another odd symptom... I'm a big electric toothbrush fan...but in the last three weeks I have to switch it off to do the back teeth on the top row...or I gag... is that weird or what...surely that tops the weird symptom list!

lol I get that gag reflex thing too, DH heard me once and thought I was about to throw up!.
Has anyone started getting more energy this trimester yet?, Im so tired, cant wait for that to kick in!.
OH yeah and about the Amniotic fluid thing... its true that is smells like semen, I was so grossed out when my waters were broken!. I threw up 3 times during my contractions and when they broke my waters they were lucky I didn't throw up again!. My mother was there for the birth too and she offered me some lip balm which was strawberry flavoured, and that nearly made me throw up too!, talk about a sensitive nose!.
Luckily its not normally that bad, otherwise I would never have been able to change bubs nappy:laughing:

Hi girls,
Well, no gagging on the toothbrush for me so I guess I'm lucky. BUT !!!! no matter whether I am pregnant or not, if I accidentally swallow toothpaste I'm highly likely to gag on it or even hurl because of it. It does get worse being pregnant so I'll sympathise with you all :D
Oh and I'm glad I've never been that close to amniotic fluid to smell it. I think I'd vomit if I got a wiff of a massive puddle of semen. Euuuuwwww....the thought of that is just gross.:barf:

Euuuwwwwwwwwww that makes me soooo glad that my waters have only ever broken when I've been in bed asleep. Leaving the bed a watery mess for DP to clean up would have to be better than sloshing around in buckets/slippers.

I'm not sure if it's too early to post this, but I have noticed some blood when I wipe my bottom after a bowel movement..hmm.I'm booking in with the Gastro for an appt today so hopefully it's nothing too serious..my partner said it's probably haemorroids O Oh! Then I looked up my pregnancy book and there is a whole page to devoted to the dreaded Hs..Apparently its common in pregnancy? eeek
oh honey the roids are not nice.... :fingerscrossed: its nothing, and it will all get better.
PinkAngelThey are some sturdy underpants Mixy :)
the bubba had done a poo so the waters were thicker, thats was have put it down to any way!?!?

Im just glad that we all feel comfortable enough in this group to talk about this stuff as its always the embarrassing things that are left out when people tell you about pregnancy!. Meanwhile your at the doctors getting all red in the face and they tell you its quite normal, you wonder why no-body mentioned it earlier:laughing:
Pregnancy, although beautiful, deffinitely opens your eyes to a LOT!

I read somewhere breaking waters can also be a lot less dramatic when you are standing up as the baby's head acts as a bit of a plug - it is when you sit or lie down that it all comes out in a rush... fun stuff indeed!
Friend today advised me to start pulling and rolling my nipples to prepare for breastfeeding... more fun stuff!

All this stuff that they don't tell you until you get pregnant! It's too late now to change my mind! :p (not that I would of course, but it still would have been good to make a fully informed decision!)

Katielou- I know what you mean, i felt a bit like that the first time round lol, but I wouldn't have changed anything either :).
Lucy- My mum told me to lie in the sun topless to harden my nipples!!. Not sure if the neighbours can see inside my yard so im a bit hesitant  She also said to massage them with pawpaw ointment or something like that to get them used to sucking... she didnt' give me this advice the first time around . I couldn't breastfeed cause no milk and oversensitive nipples... not sure if this advice will help or not.

Pawpaw cream sounds far more pleasant than a suggestion from a friend's mother (to her, not to me!) which was scour them with a scourer to toughen them up!!!!

OMG, that would really hurt!!.
I figure in the end you either can or cant breastfeed and as long as your bubs is getting nurtients from somewhere then it doesn't matter. You do miss the closeness of breast-feeding though, I think thats the main reason Im up for trying some of these ideas as much as I would like the bubs to have breast milk.

Just to show that everyone is different......My waters broke with DS2 while I was standing up and trust me, there was a BIG mess. With DS1 and DD my waters broke when I was asleep so I thought I had pee'd the bed. I then stood up to go to the toilet and left a trail of fluid from the bed to the loo and that's when I realised it wasn't incontinence . I have no idea what's gonna happen with this one....I don't even want to think about it
Re the nipples - I researched this when I started b/f'ing DD and the lactation consultants told me not to worry about 'hardening the nipples' because once bub gets the hang of it, your nipples will toughen up on their own. If they get sore/cracked/etc the best thing to do is squeeze out some cholostrom (for before bub is born) or breast milk (obviously after bub is born) and rub it in. It worked when mine got sore so I won't be buying any creams etc this time either.
Try rubbing some cholostrom round your nipples prior to bub being born Sierrasmum. It may help your sensitivity and it won't cost you a cent !
Just my 2 cents worth ;)

Thanks CC, but last time I didn't get colostrum in either untill about 2 weeks after bubs was born!!, and trust me the midwives tried too!.
Hopeing this time I will have some prior as I have heard that it good for that.:fingerscrossed:

Thanks CC!, Ive been squeezing a little everyday while in the shower, and sometimes before bed... Im trying not to stress about it this time cause I know that doesn't help!.

I can always count on my bubhub friends to gross me out!
nipples: I just used lansinoh, but not sure if it made a difference. The colostrum/milk definatly works though
waters: My waters didn't break with DD1 until she came out. With DD2 I was standing there, and they broke. I thought I had wee'd myself, and had to call the hospital - very embarrasing with bub number 2! But I had nothing to compare it to. Was only a little trickle though, and a pad was enough to stem the flow, although had to change it pretty regularly.
boobs: For those of you who have had bubs, and have bfed them, I have the full/tight feeling like I need to feed a bub! bit early!
My pelvic floor is terrible, and my asthma has flared up - worse than I've ever had it in my life.

Cass - Did you get the full boob feeling with the girls as well? I've never had that till after I have given birth.
BTW - Are your pelvic floor excercises done today? ;)

You just made me laugh out loud CC! Yes, I have done my PFE, but will do them again now ... yep, done!
No, didn't have the full feeling with the girls, but did have colostrum very early (5mths). I am also getting the "tingle" when near babies - very disconcerting!

I think I may have a hernia right next to my belly button!. It looks so weird. Im going to be seeing the OB on Thursday anyway so I will get him to check it out, but not too happy about this little appearance .

Ive been reading up on it and apparently it can be quite common during pregnancy, but I will have to have it operated on once bubs is out and im recovered. But it could just be my belly button doing weird things this pregnancy cause its pre-stretched?, not sure. It does hurt a little if I bump it, or Sierra accidently kicks my belly while changing her which makes me think its the hernia... we shall see.

Oh Cass how are you feeling today??
Ok I have had a bulging disk which has compressed the sciatic nerve... I had to do the following over 12 mths (won't be like that for you...need to get bubba to shift off it!)... i used voltaren cream for the area..if the nerve is compressed it may reduce swelling of the tissue around it... heat packs and then alternate with cold pack... I hope you don't have heartburn because the best way for me to lay was without pillows straight on the mattress...
Have you thought about getting a remedial massage????

Hey Cassie - when I had this early on I actually found that lying on that particular leg eased it a bit - but that could have just been me!

Thanks girls. Have just gotten back from the osteopath - I feel so much better. She was causing me soooo much pain, I was amazed at how little pressure she was putting on my buttocks to create such agony! She said basically I've f&$%#d my back due to dramatic weight-gain! I can't pick the girls up anymore :crying:, or do any twisting stuff.
She said it was all in my lower back, buttocks and pelvis. The pain was gone this morning, thank god!

:smiliedance::yelclap::smiliedance: that you're feeling better Cass. Now do as you're told and NO heavy lifting. :p Don't stress about the weight gain....you'll have loads of time to lose it after bub is born. Your back will be 'normal' again with a bit of luck so you'll be able to excercise and shrink your body.

Pregnancy its beautiful, but it certainly aint easy! Cass the legs pains sounded awful, I am glad they subsided..
My DP was drying a coffee cup this morning and it accidentally catapulted out of his hands and hit me in the belly bouncing off and smashing on the floor! Ouch! I am still a sore..I hope Bubs is ok, I know she's well protected in there..but I am such a worrier..I am tempted to go into emergency and have another look at her..but I know I am overreacting.. I think I just want an excuse to go in there and have a look actually..cos I still can't believe she is a girl..
Oh deary...and on the spider veins topic from the May chat..I just notice a spider vein on my cheek!!:(
Nice to be back in the chat room anyways.
Thanks for the vent...xo

Mermum I hope your belly is feeling better. Try not to worry about bub in there....she's well protected under all those layers and in all that fluid and is safer than you realise.
