View Full Version : Failure to thrive?
Took DS to the GP today and he said FTT  which I already kinda knew because he has lost weight and is now where he was 8 weeks ago. GP said he would narmally reccomend babies go to hospital with FTT but as DS has a Cranial ultrasounds booked on friday if I want to I can wait till then.
But he also said if his fluid intake drops any lower to take him straight away (he is averaging 300-400ml in 24 hours). Ok so my problem is he has had 230ml in the last 16 hours. So now I not sure what to do. His mouth is not dry though so he is not serverly dehydrated.:detective:
So if your bub has every had FTT how long did they have it before they were admitted. Ditto with feed refusal.
Thoughts please!
I'm not much help cause when my son was tagged FTT he wasn't hospitalised-
I simply kept breastfeeding and started giving comp formula feeds and it wasn't long before he regained the almost a kg he lost
but I hope he gets better soon and big hugs to you both

Its horrible being told that hey !
I was told this originally with Squeak but nothing was done i was just told to keep comping yet that didnt even work ... Stupid doctors
Anyways we managed to finally get him to gain some weight but it was a hard slog.
Yet again he started refusing feeds & some days i was lucky to get 200mls into him which had me a complete wreck.
This combined with other various problems led me to go to the Childrens Hospital where he was admitted under the wonderful GI that i wanted him to see ( the new love of my life :p ).
Everything has been somewhat sorted for now but yet again he lost weight :hissy:
So we are now on a new prescription formula under special guidelines as he is to have extra amounts to keep his calorie intake high & we will then review it in 4wks when we have a review. But if things get bad again its back to hospital for us *sigh*
Even though he was FTT he wasnt admitted for far too long & really i wish i had pushed earlier but being told repeatedly that it was my problem i felt like an idiot.
See how he goes in the morning if he isnt feeding well then head in because really you dont want to mess with it.
I really hope he feeds well for you tonite & tomorrow :fingerscrossed::hugs:

Hope Edward gets better soon. It is a terrible time for mum and bub (and the rest of the family).
Ryley was classified as FTT, but he was already in hospital when diagnosed. He was put on TPN (Total Parental Nutrition) through a central line for a little over a month, and that seemed to do the trick. We haven't looked back since then (he even made it onto the growth charts within a couple of months of being on TPN!) But he also had an ileostomy at that time (so was having absorption issues) and that was closed 3 months after being on TPN so possibly contributed to him getting better (and fatter).

Amy - Hvae we anymore news yet ?
Thankyou all so much for your support everyone.
After 48hours on a canula Edward finally started taking oral feeds again, yay!
Whilst his problems with FTT are not solved at least he is hydrated enough to come home, we have a lot of outpatient follow ups for FTT and other issues but at least I have my baby home.
I do have worries about us needing to be readmitted a lot for dehyration but atm I am just releived.
